Ever since I moved, my nails have been peeling something fierce! I buff them so they're not snaggly and gross looking, but they're so thin and sharp, like baby nails! Strengtheners and base coats haven't helped either. I've tried OPI, Nailtiques, Sally Hansen, everything! However, I've been taking a hair, skin and nails vitamin for about two months, so I'm still waiting to see if that helps. Anyone had any above-average luck with strengtheners?
use hard as hoof, it helped my peeling soooooo much, and makes them harder. however, its not a cure all, because i have heard that if you stop using it, they start peeling again. Oh well, i'll keep using it! It says to use over nail polish but i find its more effective on bare nails.
ahh I was going to suggest nailtiques, its my favorite thing ever. How long did you use it for? there was a point in my life where I had acrylic nails on for over a year nonstop and when I finally removed them, my natural nails were TERRIBLE. extremely flexible/soft, peeling/scratchy, and in some points so thin that it actually burned to get nail polish and acetone on the area. It took maybe a month or more but the nailtiques formula 2 plus got my nails to be stronger and healthier then they ever were, even before putting on the acrylics. I find it works best over the natural nails and you can polish over it, but if your nails are really bad I would just apply a coat over your natural nails once daily (emphasis on once - any more than that and your nail beds will burn like the dickens!)
they also make an "after artificial" treatment kit but I've never tried that.
Thanks for the responses!
I moved in November and I noticed lots of bending, breaking and peeling while moving furniture and boxes so I started trying strengtheners about then. I used OPI Nail Envy for about a month, then Nailtiques for about the same amount of time and now I'm using Hard as Nails and my nails peel UNDERNEATH IT! I'm seriously annoyed with this situation and my nails look so busted. I might give Nailtiques another try. I just looked up their kits. They're both tempting and reasonable priced.
I am right there with you. They are peeling and snagging on stuff not to mention hideously ugly. I have read it can be everything from change to colder climate to stress and water damage. I don't care WHAT it is just make it stop!! Good luck my peely nailed friend, I feel your pain
So it's been almost a month since I started using nailtiques again and I'm happy to report that the peeling has definitely decreased and my nails are able to grow past the quick again!
The stuff chips and peels off in less than two days, so some of the exposed tips have had the opportunity to peel a bit, but they're nothing near as bad as a month ago. Also, I wish the nailtiques dried a little harder. It's kind of plastic-y soft if you don't wait a day between coats, if that makes any sense, but I'm starting to be very pleased with the results.
I recommend giving nailtiques a try if nothing else has been working for you. Hopefully it will keep up the good work! (and please excuse the gnarly cuticles in the attached photo)
Nutra Nail makes a green tea polish that helped my nails totally transform and actually grow! It's the only thing that actually made me see results. It's only like $6 at Rite Aid or CVS.

Horsetail is like a spice or something that you can buy at a grocery store, soak it in a bowl of water and soak your fingernails in it.
its supposed to make them stronger and it really worked for me :)
