I live in utah and the same problem come around, no makeup schools :/
There is only one and it says is only a 2 week course, I want to do makeup school, but IDK if that school is something to invest money on, I've hear that makeup school take around 10 months, i don't know if this is true, but I wouls like to know what you guys think?
a 2 week corse should be really makeup school?
Another option would be to look into online MUA schools. They can have some pretty in-depth tutorials and some require you to practice on others & send in photos of you work to be graded. Some of these schools, even online, can be farely expensive, but you are not required to pick up and move somewhere for a few months up to a year. I know that University of Makeup is currently, and quited frequently, offering a 50% discount on their courses.
Another great source for some additional schooling for a reasonable price is Robert Jones Beauty Academy. It is not expensive at all and you can work through the course at your own pace, and Robert has some great tutorials. He also has several books on the subject of makeup artistry which are excellent. I am an esthetician, by trade, and I am also looking to get into freelance MUA. I learned the basics of makeup application in Cosmetology school & I am currently taking online classes at RJBA and really enjoy it. I live in Iowa so finding a MUA school is pretty much impossible.
I've always had the mind set that I don't need school, when the internet has so much information.
But after going to school myself, I learned how valuable it can be.
I learned so many things, that I wouldn't even think about searching online.
While you can learn most techniques online, knowing what works on camera, on film, on black and white, on different color filters, are some of the things that are harder to learn through youtube.
Plus, like stated above, you get a foot on the inside. The school might help you get jobs at first (maybe not paid ones, but valuable experience).
Try calling your local modeling agencies or film production companies, http://www.governor.state.tx.us/fil... ask for a list of makeup artists that they recommend. Call some of the artists and ask if you can pay them for a basic class. Just something where they teach you how find the right foundation color, applying basic makeup, looking at their kit, etc. Offer to assist them for free so you can learn the ropes. That's what I did, twelve years ago and have been working steadily ever since.
It depends on what type of makeup you want to do and what types of jobs you want. It you like esthetics then go to an Esthetician College or if you want to be able to do fx kinds of jobs then a Makeup College is a great idea or if you just want to do plain beauty makeup I recommend an Ulta or Sephora or any makeup store. I prefer Bobbi Brown and Lancolm counters.
Check out http://www.qcmakeupacademy.com it's a good makeup school that you can do at your own pace from home :) I'm currently enrolled in the Master Makeup Artistry program :) you can also check them out on Facebook.
Check the requirements for your state because alot of states now require you to be a licensed esthetician. It's a short 3-6 month program and gives you alot of credibility..A make-up certificate does not count in alot of states...Brynn P. even though I have a very established make up artistry business now I was thinking about taking the QC course..So you would recommend??? Talk to me..
I can't recommend a school, but I definitely would recommend getting an education that gives you an estheticion's license. I went to a program for special effects makeup which gave me a degree, but not an estheticion license and it's hard for me to get beauty makeup jobs aside from my own freelance gigs without it. It really is useful to have and I wish I'd looked into getting one sooner. So essentially, I know what I'm doing but have no paperwork to back myself up. I will have to go back to school one day when I have the money. So definitely save yourself some hassle there lol
Hi all :) I'm so glad I found this discussion, I recently found absolute love of make up & fashion (over the past year) I'm constantly looking at tips & advice online & trying to teach myself however I don't know much and am at a loss. I would like to get really stuck in & pursue a career as a mua but don't know where to start, any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. P.s. I live in the UK, I noticed a lot of people on here are in the US
I'm self taught. I've been doing makeup for a little over 5 years now. I don't think you need to go to school to learn it but I do think if you don't go to school you will have to learn somewhere. There are many great make-up artist who are self taught including the amazing Alex Box! But perhaps to just get a foot in the door and build up your confidence as a makeup artist do a foundation course or a basic course that will give you somewhere to start from.
I am just about to get my diploma - I was working as a self taught artist for a year before I signed up for college. I have to say I have learned SO much there, about hairdressing, skin conditions, allergies, skincare, bodypainting, even about chemicals and formulations of products. So I feel that I'm more educated in my field because I know more about all the surrounding things besides make-up, if that makes sense. This is just my opinion though, there are some fantastic self taught artists out there.

if you're going for make up I'd just do the esty program because it's short and focuses on skin. that's what I'm doing.
