Contrary to popular belief, not everybody on this planet is hearing. That means not everybody can hear [as well as hearing people can]. Like me. I am hard of hearing. I am nearly deaf in my right ear and half deaf or so in my left ear. No, I don't want your pity. I'm not looking for apologies. I don't mind being deaf at all.
But what I and what we want is to be able to enjoy things online like hearing people can. We want to be able to watch all these videos on YouTube without getting a headache after ten minutes of playing "guess what this person just said".
Lip reading is a bit of a joke IRL, FYI. We only understand about 30% of what you are saying when we attempt to read your lips.
How do you CC? Well, you can do it via YouTube Interactive Transcript or whatever it's called. No, we can't just click on that and let YouTube do the work. Have you seen what it thinks we are all saying? I click on one video about concealers and YouTube is telling me that the video is about zebras, not concealer. That's how ridiculous the system is. Or you can do what I (and xiaorishu) do which is adding the text via your video editing program. I don't care what it is. I've done it with Windows Movie Maker (mind you, it wasn't gorgeous, but it was readable) and now I'm doing it with Corel Video Pro X4. It's just like adding text when you make a title or give us the little price tag at the corner of your video. Or adding your username to the video trying to watermark it.
I see these girls and boys talking in a different language and translating that into English (like Julia/MissCheviouswhoever) but... what about not adding the English when you're speaking English? I've translated German, English, Korean, and Mandarin. Translating German, Korean, and Mandarin is a lot harder and takes more time than adding English on English.
Again, I'm deaf. Or hard of hearing, but deaf is shorter and easier to use with people. Anyway. My videos take about fifteen minutes to caption. [Of course, I sometimes get distracted by the TV or Facebook or Twitter OF COURSE TWITTER LOL so it may take longer.] And again, I'm DEAF. If I'm DEAF and it only takes FIFTEEN MINUTES to CC most of my videos and I had to try twice as hard to understand MYSELF, just imagine how much shorter it'd probably be for those of you that hear better than me, depending on the length of your video.
You don't need to add every single word. We don't need your "like", um", and uh". But we want to know whether or not this new NAKED foundation is worth trying. We want to know that you don't like this new MAC collection that just came out. We want to know what you're saying in your introduction and we want to know what inspired you to create this makeup tutorial or this outfit.
We're like you.
We're human beings.
Don't forget about us because we can't hear [very well].
Allow us to enjoy your videos and allow yourself to bring this entire new world and group of people that want to watch your videos but it's a darn struggle to do so sometimes.

I honestly haven't been able to edit my videos on windows live movie maker because it won't accept my videos no matter how hard I try.. Who I contact. So yes I'm definitely interested in captioning my videos just have never known how. I only just started YouTube August 1st, I'd love to have a channel where ALL could enjoy.. The editor on YouTube does not work do you say? Any other options? I use my iPhone4s at the moment to shoot, I have a point & shoot camera, I'll see if windows live maker can accept those videos. Windows Movie Maker will not accept files that are .MOV (because it's stupid). You have to convert your files to MPEG-II which you can do if you download AnyVideo Converter from Google. The subtitle option on WMM is under the Titles & Credits.
Interactive Transcript/Caption system from YouTube works, but YOU!, the person that uploads videos, has to do the captioning. You have to change the words. The "automatic" does not work. It's a complete joke. I honestly don't know why YT has this automatic crap and hasn't done anything to fix it in three years, tbh.
I just wanna give out candy to anybody that even CONSIDERS it. That makes me happy.

Alex, just make the font size smaller and move it to the bottom of the video. I keep trying to make mine smaller but then they suddenly seem three times bigger once it's somewhere not on my video editing program. Damn it looking smaller on there, LOL! Like, you can put it at the bottom when you're focusing on the eyes and then maybe near the top when you're focusing on the lips so it's not in the way. I've been captioning for a month and still can't find a way I'm really happy with, but as long as I'm still in experimenting mode, it's okay as long as it's readable! Just no crazy cursive fonts! hahaha
If you look at xiaorishu's videos, you can get an idea of what she does with her captioning. It's extremely fancy, but yeah. You can just see where she places it and how big the font is, etc.

The captions on youtube do work. You either have to upload your own transcript or you can create it on youtube. I was just starting to do captions on my tutorials, i was setting up my transcripts, they aren't complete yet, though. But do be warned it is time consuming. Like Rikki said, you don't have to do word for word but getting the times to line up is tedious.
Here's how:
1. Go to the video you wish to add captions to.
2. On the black bar at the top click the down arrow and click "captions"
3a. (if you have a pre-made transcript) click "upload caption file or transcript"
3b. (if you don't have a transcript) click "English *machine transcript*"
4. And from there fill in your captions for each time length.
5. Done and save.
I hope this helped anyone looking to caption their videos, and Rikki, don't worry, soon all of youtube will be captioned, properly! lol :D

I think this is an excellent idea and a very well written rant. I was loling at your sarcasm and you really presented yourself as a likable person. Unfortunately i do not have or know how to use the technology to caption my own youtube videos. I am relatively new to youtube and upload my videos directly from my crappy webcam. but i do plan to invest into better technology for my youtube channel as the funds become available and i would be more than willing to provide videos with captions for the hearing impaired. I will try out the youtube method.

I am hard of hearing, so i need closed caption when i can't hear or understand what is being said. YouTube has settings, so you can turn on closed caption on any video :-)

Maybe a few words here and there, but it's completely nonsensical! Unless the uploader is like feministfrequency or simonandmartina who upload captions files, it doesn't work the way it should.

@ Rikki P. - Do you wear hearing aids? if not, you should see about getting a pair with a switch (for phones/headphones) use, it truly does help more. But if you already have hearing aids, make an appointment with an Audiologist or Hearing Aid Center, you might just need to have the volume adjusted & the hearing aids cleaned out. Moisture builds up over time which causes low hearing.
I use to subtitle Japanese tv shows so I have a totally different program to do subtitling in and it's a pain in the rear. How well does Corel Video Pro X4 work and what's the price tag on it?
