I recently earned my B.A (in health care), but want to start a second career. I was thinking about going to beauty school; but don't know if it is really worth it. Has anyone been in this situation or something similar? Is going to a Cosmetology school worth it?
You answered your own question if you love it , it will be worth it if you are unsure and look at it as more of a hobby /experimenting then no... You should only go if you plan to be a hair stylist
It's a real statistic that up to 80% of people that go to cosmetology school do not end up practicing any beauty arts. I am a licensed esthetician and have been for 10 years. So many people look at cosmetology school as a "fun" option for a career, but it's still a real, bonafide career path that you get what you put into it. Personally, if it's not something you are truly planning on pursuing as a career path with longevity, I would skip it and stay strictly on a hobbyist level. Where I live, cosmetology school is now around 30K, which is considerably higher for a year of schooling than a traditional state run college or community college.
If it is your passion, then it is worth it. Otherwise, if you are just doing it for fun, stick to it as a hobby. You do not want to waste your money if you don't want to do it as a career living. People go to beauty school to get a license. Let me tell you, it's not that easy and it's considered hard work! It's not only about hair and makeup tho. There's more into that but enjoy it if you plan on going to school. :)
I went to school for psych.... Decided I needed a change a more creative career... No regrets. Cosmetology school was the best thing I ever did. I remembered what I love about people, being creative, constantly learning, and making other people happy. If you like to do hair, makeup, nails... GO FOR IT!!!!
I have been in Beauty School for a year now and I absolutely love it. It is hard work. I work full time and I go to class part-time. Saturdays class is a must. If you love it you will do anything you can to get your license. I totally agree with the other gals you must have a passion in this industry otherwise don't waste your time. People think that oh it's beauty school how hard can it be, honestly you will not know until you go through it. It is hard work but I am sure the hard work will pay off.... :)
I am in the same position, I love e beauty industry but I need some advice from some estheticians because I originally wanted to do hair but realized working in a spa, hotel, or med spa is right up my alley and requires less hours and specializes more in makeup which I love. I prob will be going to Aveda, but would love some feedback from some of you...and yes I have a passion for all things in the industry and love my facials. Hopefully learn to do laser and a dream injectables and work with a plastic surgeon.
