If it is non-abrasive, 3 x's a week if you're dry... for oily skin 2 x's a week the most. if it is abrasive... only 1 time a week! try to stay away from those... you could be stripping your surface layer, which might be causing you to break out =)
wow! thanks you guys. I was totally doing it wrong! all you guys are so helpful, thank you. And to answer Shelley, I use saint Ives blemish control apricot scrub.
Exfoliation is so important!!! It's what removes the dead skin to expose the new glowing skin underneath. It's ok to do everyday with a light exfoliant. There is also chemical and physical exfoliation. If you are using a physical exfoliant make sure that the beads are round. Sugar exfoliants are round, that allows it to travel into the pore and out smoothly, if you are using something other than that, chances are it is of an irregular shape and what that does is basically ripping your pores open. That makes them look bigger and that the last thing you want to do!!!! You should use those for your feet not your face!!!! I rep an awesome skin care line from the Doctors that created ProActiv. We have great affordable exfoliants! And other amazing products!! It's worth a look http://www.kht.myrandf.com. But please watch what you are exfoliating with!! You could be causing damage you won't want to see at 40!!!!!
Yeah Jasmine you should exfoliate 1-2x per week depending on your skin type and the method of exfoliating, whether you use chemical peels salt, sugar, jojoba, scrubs will determine how often you should exfoliate.
* be careful of using popular apricot scrubs because they have jagged edges that tend to rip at your skin and enlarge pores
*be sure that all manual scrubs you are using are rounded and low/non abrasive

I used to exfoliate every other day because that's what the product said (3 or 4 days a week) but I started to break out. So how often should I do it?

When your skin begins to feel and look congested. That's when I exfoliate. And for me that is usually once every other week.

No more then twice a week. If you exceed that then your skin can damage easily. Be gental when working around your face.

also don't exfoliate when you have broken out skin, this will open the broken out areas and spread the bacteria.
