I'm self-taught for the most part. I do not have a cosmetology license (although that may change in the future). I found that I learned a lot working in a theater as well as learning to paint from drag queens. Beyond that, a misspent youth reading fashion magazines and watching lots of science fiction and trying to adapt the looks without the use of prosthetics (which I suck at).
Personally, I'm staying away from QC Makeup Academy because of the fact that I can't seem to find an unbiased opinion on the program nor can I get a direct answer from any of its customer support agents. I'm leery of choosing an online school because it seems like none of them are accredited at all (that, and I work full-time dealing with student loans so I have no great desire to take out another private loan).
