I work out and always like to drink something to rebuild my muscles after a work out. But protein powders are icky and honestly I'm sure there's something at home I can make that's better and cheaper. Any ideas???

try to find some foods that contain a lot of protein. For example eat eggs (but not too much!) and cottage cheese :) And instead of minced meat, use chicken.

I'm not sure if you would like this but I like to drink this.

1 cup of ice
1 cup of soy milk
1 banana
1 cup crunchy Almond butter or Crunchy peanut butter
1/2 c plain yogurt or vanilla yogurt.

Just add everything to a blender and blend! I don't blend it down completely cause I like the texture of the nuts but very fine pieces.

You can use regular milk/rice milk/almond milk and add more to your liking a long with ice. I have also used this recipe with a vanilla flavored protein powder and I would crave it cause it was so good!!

If you don't mind and aren't afraid, add a raw egg and blend, it is good protein and it makes it nice and frothy!

Eating raw egg is just asking for trouble. I don't measure out my ingredients for protein shakes but this is what I throw in my blender....coconut milk, one banana, handful of strawberries, greek yogurt, and maybe a dash of wheat germ. I'm a fitness competitor so this is someting I drink instead of my other alternative which is by Precision Engineered-Whey Protein in Chocolate. I agree with you about the nasty taste of some of the powder protein shakes but with this one I actually use coconut milk and throw in a little greek yogurt. And it taste so freakin good! If you do decide to re-try the powder protein route I highly advise not guzzling this stuff everyday because its more intended for hardcore training. I'm in the gym 6 days a week for 2-3 hours so for me my body can tolerate it and craves it. And please don't go the raw egg route.

Another idea would be to try a whey protein company that actually makes GOOD tasting flavors ;) My boyfriend and I have been using some called Trutein whey protein by Trunutrition, the vanilla tastes great. Throw some fruit of your liking such as banana's, strawberry's or even greek yogurt like the other girls have said and it tastes great. Nuts are also a good idea and it mixes well in protein powders. Lastly, if your very busy and not always able to blend your mix into a blender, a great alternative are to get bottles meant to mix your protein such as Blender Bottles. Hope that helps!

Thank you ladies!! I'll def look into all of your tips! I've been under weight my whole life, and I'd like to be a little healthier is all. And not gain to much in a unhealthy manner. Thank you again I'm so happy more than one person could help me =)

This was a really good topic! I've been craving smoothies lately so I might as well make a nice protein shake. Some of these suggestions sound pretty delicious

Stephanie M. You mentioned you have been working out....is it only cardio you doing? Because if you're looking to gain toned weight I would suggest incorporating weights into the rotation. It will put weight on you but you won't come out looking like Hulk Hogan unless that's a look you're trying to achieve. I used to be underweight myself due to super high metab. I started lifting weights and it was a wrap!!! I gained some mass but its good mass. Now something that was just a way to gain weight has turned into a sport for me because I now compete in bikini competitions but getting ready to head into figure where I need to tack on more muscle mass. Congrats on working out, whatever method you are working, and wanting to eat healthy to reach your goals. Healthy route is always the best route. :)

I was always underweight but then i got on new meds and gained a ton. I have worked a lot of it off but now im not as tight as i used to be (jiggle city) what could i do to firm up. My gym offers the insanity fitness routine i wanted to try it. Any other protein drink suggestions, i dont get the nitrition i should becausr i dont like meat or veggies lol just pasta and potatoes :-/

@Rachel H. The Insanity fitness is perfect if you feel intimidated by the weights. Though the weights would help you tighten up quicker I do insanity as my cardio since I'm not a fan of the treadmill. You will literally come out of there sweating buckets but it so worth it. Lay off the pasta and potatoes. Both are starches and will do nothing but convert to sugar and instead of losing weight you'll be gaining. Its great in moderation but if its a staple in your everyday diet...watch out. If you can't resist the pasta at least reach for whole wheat pasta. Since you don't like meat I would make sure to include unsalted almonds into your diet. Even though you're trying to tone up your body still needs a decent amount of fat to maintain healthy hair and skin. If you eat seafood Salmon is a great choice if you don't do the chicken and red meat. I don't eat red meat but I have to force myself to eat chicken because of what I do and I still haven't perfected the whole vegan eating thing so I usually reach for tofu and season it up and throw in veggies and pair it up with brown rice. If you have the money to spare I would also look into Shakeology. I tried it for a month during my off season and that stuff was great. It has all the nutrients I needed and it still tasted yummy. Also it allows you to add fruit and yogurt to really bring it up a notch. I drank it to replace 1 of the 6 meals I eat out of the day. I hope I helped you some. :)

Whoa that is pricy haha know any cheaper ones. Thank you i appreciate the tips

@Rachel H. Yeah...it is pricey but it sure does taste good.lol. I went thru my recipe book and found something that you might like. :)

Barlean's Flaxseed Oil (must keep in fridge) approx. $11.00-8oz.
Arrowhead Mills Organic Golden Flaxseed (must be ground) approx. $2.79-14oz.
Cranberry Concentrate $8.00
Frozen fruit, strawberries,blueberries
Fresh or frozen bananas

Smoothie

1/2 banana
4 whole frozen strawberries and/or large tablespoon of blueberries
1 tablespoon GROUND flaxseed
1 tablespoon flaxseed oil refrigerated
5oz. grape or cran/grape OR water
1 scoop of 100% whey protein (scoop in bag)
1 teaspoon of cranberry concentrate
You can add a 6oz amount of yogurt to give it a thick texture but its not necessary (I would use Greek yogurt since it contains more protein than regular yogurt)
A handful of crushed ice (not cubed unless you want to kill your blender blades)
Blend in electric blender---then chop

If you have any leftover, pour into plastic container and freeze.
Next day use leftover as base and just add ground flaxseed, flaxseed oil and whey protein plus additional fruit.

All of the ingredients can be found at your local Whole Foods or any health food store in your area. What's nice about it is that you can switch up the fruit. If you like tropical fruits you can turn into a tropical smoothie by adding pineapple or papaya. :)

I play with a bunch of different ingredients for my protein shakes. I always add some whey protein, but then I'll use different fruits and whatnot. Sometimes I'll even add in some spinach. And I use mostly almond milk or water for the liquid base. Have you heard of PB2? Basically powdered peanut butter without the gross fats and less calories.

@Karissa B. Yep, sometimes I add it into my chocolate protein shakes when I'm bored and I'm no where near my "cheat day". Makes it taste like a Reeses Peanut Butter cup. Love it. :)
