I am a licensed cosmetologist that is starting to do make up also. Mostly in the salon but I also have had some freelance work with weddings. Is just having a cosmetology license enough or do I need any other licenses or certificate to do my own freelance work? I live in New York state.
You're good to go. You don't need a license to do freelance makeup work unless it is in a salon environment (in most states). However, you should establish yourself as a sole proprietor for tax purposes.
In the future.... If you have questions like this, they should be directed to the NY State Board or a tax agent - not a forum where you can get incorrect information. I would contact both, and it wouldn't hurt to do your research on small businesses. Although, your first concern is taxes!
You might to consider taking out a business insurance policy. While you are insured in the salon (under their policy) if you are on location such as a hotel or someone's house you are not covered. It just gives you protection in case someone trips over your kit, gets an allergic reaction, etc. I live & work in NYC and a basic policy will run about $30 a month. Also a lot of wedding planners require a copy of your policy.
