I have pretty dark brown hair and I want to lighten it a bit. I know it's tricky without going to a salon, and I won't use sun in! what to do?

You could bleach it once :}

No! in the summer (or when it's hot), put lemon juice in it and sit in the sun, you'll see results quite quickly.

I want to do the same and also have dark brown hair.. I've heard mixing ground cinnamon with conditioner to make a hair mask works as well?

If you want to color it, I'd recomand L'Oreal, because it has great aubern and brown shades which actually work on even the darkest hair. Trust me, I've been using it since college. Good luck.

Is your hair dyed? because if it is, you could start with an at home colour remover which would make it easier to use lighter colours without necessarily having to bleach it.

And I also agree with @biborka b- loreal's shades tend to work very well to lighten my dark hair when I fancy doing it!

I'm a cosmetologist- don't use lemon or peroxide, that will ruin your hair. if your hair is dyed the only way to lighten it is will color remover or bleach. there is nothing wrong with using dye as long as it is done correctly.
can everyone please stop spreading these 'diy' remedies? its not worth the risk, things like peroxide and lemon juice might have been used in the past but the research and development that has gone into color formulation make them much safe alternatives! I know it can be tempting to try something that seems cheaper or more natural but as long as you do your research about dying it can be done at home and with much better results!

My hair is natural without any dye, wht do you recommend dina? in terms of brands etc.

I would recommend a dye since you only want a slightly lighter shade. Bleach is ok to use but a dye will stop once it reaches a certain color and bleach will not.
I'd also suggest a demi permanent color bc they are gentler than permanent colors, then if you want to go back to a darker color in the fall it will inflict as little damage possible. The only catch is that if you decide to go lighter again a few months after dying it darker you will most likely need to use bleach. If you think the color change is something you're interested to have for quite a while then go ahead and use a permanent and refresh the color with demis.
Brands of color arent as important as people make it out to be, but its definitely best to avoid box dye. Going to a beauty supply will cost a little more up front but youl'l get more for your money and have more control over how much 'damage' is done to your hair.
Get what color you want it to be and either a 10 or 20 volume developer. Mix it according to that brands directions (most are 1:1, or equal parts but some will say 1:2/2:1 which means twice as much developer than color).
The most important thing for all coloring is to be aware of your body, some people will have allergic reactions to the dye, they are rare but can be very serious. If you feel sick at any point wash the dye out. If using bleach and your scalp starts to burn (bleach will have a tingly sensation though and feels odd at first) wash it out even if its not the color you want it to be. If you still feel sick after washing the product out visit a hospital and bring the products packaging with you so they can figure out how to treat you.
Don't be fearful about color though, it has some risks, but like I said, as long as you're mindful and take the time to educate yourself about proper procedures you'll be fine!

LOREAL FERIA has a box color/dye you can buy at walmart that lightens natural dark brown hair up to 4 shades lighter. I didnt realize it was only for natural undyed hair and I bought it and it lightened my roots to dirty blonde! lol but didnt do anything to the rest of my hair :) you should try it tho. Its like $8 or $9. It worked really well on my roots!! lol.
