No. you have to get rid of the black pigments and this only happens with bleaching...

I let my black hair fade on its own and it faded enough that a burgundy took in my hair it was a dye specifically for dark hair it took nicely

When I was training I changed my hair colour every 2 minutes. To help it fade use a 2in1 shampoo or head and shoulders. They are not very good at keeping colour. How many times have you coloured it black?

You can also use a color remover to get the black out, it won't damage the hair like a bleach but don't get it on virgin hair- which is any hair that has not been dyed before like your roots. Depending on the color you want it to be you might need to use some bleach. Bleach is safe to use as long as the person mixing and applying it knows what they're doing so I'd advise visiting a pro for the bleaching and you can dye it the red you want at home to save some money.

Depends how long you've had black hair I had mine for 7 years and tried to fade and redye over it but it didnt work
ended up going to a salon and had it stripped and dyed

Best bet is to go to a salon. They'll take the color out with less damage than doing it yourself. My black hair would always fade so I never had too much of a problem dying over it. But I think that was just from ware n tare.
