I do a messy bun with an elastic hair band every day and need something new to do thats cute and functional.

Why not a cute braid? Or pin your bangs up a bit (if that's what you're holding back) and do a high pony. If nothing else maybe change the elastic you use to a cute headband (or lace band etc) just changing those can work WONDERS!

Well my hairs only shoulder length so a braid won't work tho I wish it would.
and I have to wear the headband cuz I have flyaways all around my face. sometimes I'll do a poof and forget the band but the flyaways drive me nuts lol

I put my hair in a pony tail at the center back of my head, so about eye level. Then I'll put my hand on the center top of my head fingers pointed back and pull towards my nose. this gives it a little poof on top but keeps it subtle.
