Straighten your hair then push your hair to the side you want it on. You then desperate your hair to 2 pieces. You start by taking a piece of hair from the outter most part and take that piece and bring it to the other side. You go back and forth from each side until you get to the bottom of your hair. Secure it with an elastic band then just pull on the braid so it can look bigger. Hope I helped a little. You can even go on YouTube and search "fish tale braid"

If you can't the first time use an elastic band so you can desperate your hair to 2 pieces without losing any hair :-) at the end remove it and it will look great.

I don't think you'll have to straighen your hair... In my experience, mermaid braids work better on curly hair :) or you can do beach waves if your hair is way too curly :)
