I am in my last few weeks in aesthetics school, and it just hit me this morning that its crunch time. I'm passionate about my soon to be career, so naturally I'm very excited to jump head first into the beauty industry. My dream job would be doing facial in a spa setting, and doing make up on the weekends.

I consider myself a newbie when it comes to make up artistry, but I have come a loooonnnng way in the past year. I am constantly watching tutorials, practicing and reading. Recently, I've finally decided that I'm ready to start a portfolio and putting myself out there as a mua.

My question to you all is (I'm sure you get this all the time), what are some websites, books, tutorials...any resources that you've found helpful to start your career? Advice is greatly appreciated!

How I started my career is by assisting a makeup artist at weddings. Later, I paired up with a hairdresser and a photographer. whenever one of us got a gig meant we all did since we are a package. I still do that but now I work at a salon near wineries and I run their wedding team. I am a mua and hairdresser by the way but my heart belongs to makeup. :-) Its a awesome buisness but you have to learn and not be afraid to put yourself out there. take lots of pictures of your work now before you graduate. Instead of books or watching tutorals, my advice is to get out there and learn from a real person.

Read as many makeup and art/design books as you can. Subscribe to fashion magazines for inspiration; I find the European and Asian versions much more inspirational. Submit your name at local agencies and tell them you would like to assist senior artists. Work on that portfolio; I don't use assistants who don't have a current port.
