Can I use coconut oil instead of tanning oil? would it be less harmful? if not what brands of tanning oil do you recommend.

Yes you can. Just make sure you don't stay out as long as you would with tanning oil because something in coconut oil makes your skin bronze/tan quicker. It would be less harmful. Hope it helps!:-)

Oh Mackenzie, you should be very very careful with using oil in the sun, you can get terrible burnt and damage your skin. I would suggest you use a sunscreen if you are going to be in the sun for a long period of time, that will protect you from the damaging rays from the sun.

I agree with Sabrina. Depending on your skintone, how many days you're going to be in the sun and the time of the day should be a guide for choosing your products. Since you're light, I would suggest a very high spf dry sunblock for your face and neck, like a 50. And start with an spf 15-30 on your body to start with on your first day, then progressively go lower on 2nd & 3rd days like and 8 to 15. Then depending on your skin, eventually going to an spf 4 oil. I wouldn't ever use an oil without an spf even if it's a 4. This is just an example of a guide. It can be tweaked to fit different skintones.

Ladies I heard that coconut oil is a natural sun screen - any truth to that? Here is one article that claims this and tries to back it up: http://naturalsociety.com/ditch-toxic-sunscreen-use-coconut-oil-instead/
They only cite one source a book by Bruce Fife, ND (naturopathic doctor) and here is more about him: http://www.life-saving-naturalcures-and-naturalremedies.com/dr-bruce-fife-interview-coconut-oil-expert.html
So I don't know if there is any truth or scientific evidence to support these claims but just wanted to share that

Well sometimes oils and butters such as coconut and shea naturally contain SOME spf but it's not nearly enough to protect from harmful UV rays, unfortunately... I wouldn't rely on that small amount to protect me, but each person can make their own decisions, this is what I would do.
