So I am a soon to be freshman and I love makeup. I love experimenting with dark colors and nudes. I really want to wear a dark lip (maroon, black), but is it a little too much for school? Obviously for the first week or two, I'll wear subtle lipsticks and just keep getting darker while also switching with nude lipsticks.

Yeah that's a good idea for you to gradually make your way the bold lipsticks.

Personally I think it's too much for school (probably going to be an unpopular opinion but yeah...). I wear really minimal makeup to work (I'm in my early twenties) and would advise the same for school. You're there to work at the end of the day and doing something simple with your hair and makeup will save you precious time in the morning.
But then again I'm from the UK where we have uniform and my school had very strict rules on makeup so it's never something I could have worn at school. Plus when we did have free reign at sixth form (16-18) none of us really cared much and just wanted extra time in bed :P

For me personally, its a bit much for high school, but thats just me. If its allowed then go for it. (:

High school is where you GET the chance to do bold looks and crazy hair without worry. a lot of jobs won't let you later on. so if your school has no rule against it I say go all out and enjoy while you can. I SURE wish I had. there were a lot of creative people at my schools I was too shy to imitate and a bold lipstick is now the most adventurous I'm allowed to go on the weekdays. my only suggestion would be to stay away from foundations and anything heavy on your skin for now. you really do want to take advantage of your youth and let your skin breathe because it will be healthier in the long run. but lipsticks and eyeshadows are pretty fair game, they come off at the end of the day (or sooner) with no consequences for your skin.

I know a lot of people who wear bold lips to school and it looks great!! I just don't like the maintenance so I just wear lip balm, but if you want to wear bold lips go for it!!

I know a ton of people who wore bold lips to school and rocked it. If you plan to do this, be sure to bring makeup remover wipes and maybe powder with you to help maintain your lips and keep them looking nice. Especially with lunch, the color might transfer and get messy so you want to be able to clean up

I know at least four people at my high school who wear false lashes bold lips and dramatic eye makeup. You can gradually move to a bolder look or you can start out right off the bat. If that's what you like to do then that's a part of who you are and you should do whatever you like to do aside from everyone's opinion. I wear a lot more makeup than most kids at my school and I've gotten a ton of compliments from people I don't even normally talk to.

I say go for it! Don't let your age define how you wanna express yourself go for a dark lip and rock it! :)

I don't think black is appropriate for high school, and that's coming from someone who sometimes wears black lipstick on a regular day. Stick to reds and purples for bold colors.

Wear whatever you want. As long as it's not against the school dress code, it's appropriate.

I'm a junior high teacher. My school had uniforms, and makeup was the only way kids could express themselves. My students wore dark lipsticks all the time. I see absolutely nothing wrong with wearing dark lipsticks, even black. Junior high and high school are the ages of experimentation. If I may ask, what is making you question if it's okay or not? If it follows the dress code, what's the problem?

If you're comfortable go for it. If you're a little hesitant gradually going darker is a great idea. I loved the freedom we had in school when it came to hair, makeup and some of the dress code rules (would've been nice to hop out the shower and throw yoga pants on but jeans are comfy too)

I'm in high school and I'd say wear whatever lipstick you want because if youre comfortable in it thats all that matters. Where you are shouldnt determine what you wear and don't wear.

Wear what you want girl. You don't need to change your likes for school. Be you, people will like you for you. I just graduated. I know you just need to do what you like.

Thank you guys so much! Hearing all this positivity here just made my week. It doesn't go against school dress code, but I'm more scared of being talked badly about and just being that girl who takes everything over the top. I defiantly have grown a lot of confidence thanks to you guys. :)

Hailey--I've found that girls who go for bold trends give other girls the confidence and boost to go for styles they like, too! I remember getting compliments on my personal style that went a little off what was the norm. I wore skinny jeans two years before anyone else in my school. I took a lot of my style from Seventeen magazine. I had very low self-esteem, and had spent all of junior high trying to fit in. Even though I was still super self-conscious in high school, I feel like taking the leap in personal style helped me be the confident person I am today. It helped that I went to a school with 2500 students, so no one really stuck out.
I know this sounds silly, but when I tried a purply lipstick last year I became a new person. I have become more and more confident over the last year, and it all started with a bold lipstick. Never be afraid of being you :)
