Coconut Oil Making my Hair Super Crunchy and Frizzy?

Hello ladies,

I just have a random question that I have been wondering about. I always hear women say they like using coconut oil in their hair as a deep conditioning treatment. I use coconut oil on my body especially when my eczema acts up however, when I put coconut oil in my hair it dries it out really bad. When I say bad, I mean worst frizz I've ever seen. My hair sometimes also gets dry and crunchy feeling. Isnt coconut oil supposed to do the opposite of drying my hair out? Do any of you know why this might be and do any of you ladies get this with coconut oil too? By the way I have tried it for only 15 min at a time all the way up to overnight. I get the same results. My hair is naturally frizzy but very thick and shiny, semi-wavy.

Thanks!

I absolutely hate coconut oil in my hair lol. I find I just can't wash it out as hard as I try and then my hair looks super oily and crunchy. Coconut oil isn't a moisturizer and does not penetrate into the hair/skin. it basically just acts as a barrier to hold in moisture (similar to vaseline). I suggest trying argan oil in your hair :)

I second what Shauna said. and I have the same experience. my hair does not like coconut oil and feels dried out. my skin doesn't either And I have a whole jar that's sitting in my kitchen waiting to go to waste. lol everyone is different so finding what works for your hair is going to take some experimentation.

Do you apply it to dry or damp hair?

I may be mistaken, but it may be from overuse or just not needing it. The protein in the oil, while great if you're lacking protein, can actually put your hair in worse condition. So unless your hair is badly damaged, coconut oil more than 2-3x a month is not necessary. You also may not be washing it out completely (it's a pain to get out) so it may be drying in your hair and getting crunchy. Put it on before your shower, then shampoo and condition as normal. DON't skip conditioner. And lastly, some things just don't work as well for some as it does for others. Perhaps try almond oil or olive oil; they don't penetrate the hair shaft like coconut oil does, but they will still moisturize and make your hair soft.

Okey dokey so I posted a little while regarding this issue. I started off with healthy hair that I have bleached to a silver blonde colour. I decided to try Coconut oil because I heard how amazing it is and I've used it for other things so thought.. Hey I'll try it in my hair. So after about 3 tries of putting it in my hair as a deep conditioner, I never put it in my hair again. Why? Because it's damaged the crap out of my hair. Why again? Because my hair already had enough protein and the coconut oil put in wayyy to much protein which has the opposite effect making the hair brittle and snaps.

So... The point is.. Too much protein can damage your hair severely and coconut oil has a lot of protein do for people with hair that has good amount of protein shouldn't use coconut oil.

To reverse the damage (if not too late)... Stop using protein in any form in your hair! Remove keratin products too.

I had to throw out a bunch of my hair products and just started using my usual argon oil conditioner and then my "6 essential oils" oil and a deep conditioner (I change up a lot, just make sure it ha no protein).

Don't touch your hair if you can, don't use heat.

Hope this helps!! Xxx

Ps. Even though my hair has been bleached about 3/4 times, it was still very strong and healthy as I had always taken extremely good care of my hair before and afterwards. This is why I had the damage from the coconut oil because I already had enough protein from the previous treatments I had done to take care of my hair before the coconut oil.

This has been my favorite product for quite a while now and I don't tend to stick with the same kind of hair oil very long because most of them don't work very well for me because they weigh down my hair with it being so fine. But this is a really nice product, it's lightweight and smells nice, makes my hair feel soft and smooth. I originally tried it as a sample in either Ipsy or Birchbox, but since I am a licensed Cosmetologist and it's a professional product I buy it from Cosmoprof which is a salon supply store only professionals can shop at because it's less expensive there. I'm not sure where else sells it besides either the Ipsy or Birchbox website or a salon that might sell it. But I do highly recommend it.
