Hi! My hair is a curly wavy mixture. (It really depends on the day). It's fairly long too. I was wondering if anyone knew how to make my curls start closer to the root. Right now they start about at my ear.
Is it just a matter of not using heat for a while? I've been told that if you just let your hair do its thing for a bit it gets better. Like more curly. Is this true?

Using heat excessively definitely can be a cause of looser curls. I found that after I totally stopped putting heat on my hair, my curls not only became more uniform but also looked way more defined.

Heat damage is one of the worst things for curls. so that may help. but it could just be the way your hair is naturally, straighter on top and waiver on bottom, because of how it weighs itself down and whatnot. a shorter haircut would help but I completely understand an aversion to that. you could try scrunching whatever leave in product or gel you use into your hair while it's wet with your head upside down. the longer you can stand to hang upside down to dry the better. I know a lot of product directions say to avoid the roots or focus on the ends but if you have curly or wavy hair you want the extra moisture at the roots as well and curly hair is almost always a thick or coarse enough texture that you can use product on your roots.
