How do you choose to spend your money on makeup. Do you support controversial brands like lime crime, etc. is it based on the creator or shady business practices Why, or why not? have you boycotted a brand? What brand is it?

I personally choose to spend money on cosmetics that appeal to me. People have to learn to step back and decide based on the information provided whether they want to spend their money there or not.
Being an informed consumer will get the best bang for your buck.
The company that manufacturers KVD's make up creates for other brands as well... Urban Decay and MUFE have items produced in the same place.. Your options in this time is literally unlimited.. You can even find dupes of these items from private sellers on Etsy. The beauty industry is a rather large one, and from speaking to Alma and meddling in some Cosmetic Groups you start to learn how the industry works.

I agree with kitty. and to add to it, I'm careful with who I give my money to at every angle. I consider myself a principled person and I also realize my position as a consumer (having worked in sales, customer service, and hospitality for a lot of years) my money is paying their bills. even if I've only spent a few dollars. every dollar matters because they all make up the profits.
I also believe in judging people. not at all by their skin color, religion, race, or anything else that doesn't really matter. But I believe you should ABSOLUTELY judge a person by their personality and their character. you should recognize and respond to who they are and what they do, because that's how we keep ourselves safe as humans. that's how we make friends, and thats how we know who is dangerous to us or society in general.
so I have boycotted brands whose owners have repeatedly been disrespectful, dishonest, insulting, discriminatory, etc. in both cosmetics and other things. I don't feel comfortable contributing to them enjoying a certain lifestyle while they are hurting other people doing the same, or promoting negativity in a world that has too much as it is.

like kitty said, there is almost always a dupe or substitute, even if you have to get it custom made on etsy. it's just not worth it to me. it REALLY is SO much easier to do the right thing. no "buts" "oh wells" "whatevers" no pretending I don't care about things that affect the world I live in when I know I do. it's just easier.

I agree with Kitty, I tend not to let my personal opinions, or the opinions of others, on the inner workings of a given company sway me too much. If a product is good, then it's good, and I'll likely purchase it regardless. However, if you have very strong feelings on a given company, whether it's because of the creator, the face or the business practices, then avoiding that company is entirely within your rights, and like Kitty said, everything is dupeable to some extent.

What I don't like is the overwhelming urge people have to force their opinions on others, rather than adopting a live-and-let-live type of policy towards the whole thing. Unfortunately in this day and age, it is really easy to be made to feel as though you don't have a right to your opinions, whatever they may be, and that is by far my biggest issue with the cosmetics industry and cosmetics enthusiasts community.

I completely agree with you Hannah, on those who try to force their opinion and belief.. Some people like red.. Some people like blue.. If you wouldn't degrade someone for liking a different color, why degrade someone for having a different view? Everyone has a different taste at the end of the day. Lots of people love ColourPops liquid lipstick.. They felt so dry and cracked all over my lips but I'm not going to attack someone for loving it. I simply won't buy it and move on. A lot of people can't agree to disagree respectfully which is a bummer :/

I am so glad this is a topic. I have skin sensitivity so some brands are better for me than others. Some brands I use that is really good is Mac surprisingly. I know shocker. And I feel like most people here are respectful of that. But because Mac is not cruelty free I feel extremely judge by some people who attack people for buying that brand. I am 100% all for brands that are non cruelty. When it comes down to it I have to do what's best for me too. I hope I'm still on topic. But I don't think you should judge people for how they choose to spend their money.

I'm sorry if mine was a crazy rant that kind of went no where! Lol!

Personally, I don't support controversial brands.
I used to like Lime Crime for their colors but eventually more brands made colors like that(I was very fond of Airborn Unicorn and D'lilac as well as Countessa Fluorescent but this was when Candy Yum Yum from MAC was limited edition and discontinued by then)

I wasn't fond of the formula though, they felt too creamy for my taste. I prefer mattes.

As far as Jeffree Star, I was thinking about buying a lipstick(I've tried two though) and once I had tried it I didn't even like the formula.
I felt it was sticky, transferred and wouldn't last long.
An overhyped product.

I'm not someone that gets dry/flaky or patchy from using matte formulas so I tend to like really matte products on my lips that don't budge until I take them off.
The reason I was hesitant prior to that was because I've heard of him before. My friend was a fan of his music but it just seemed like he was... Off.
There was just something about him I didn't like, I just sensed he was a crappy person and then I've seen things come to light over the years and... Meh.
Wouldn't support someone like that.

And I ALSO agree with Meagan.
I've been using MAC since I first started using makeup in middle school.
Around 2006-2007?
It was and still is my go-to brand but there are people who get so angry that I use it solely because they aren't cruelty-free.
I think that's a different situation because in order to sell in China they HAVE to test on animals and I think that has less to do with the brand and everything to do with Chinese laws.
Sure, the brand could pull from the Chinese market but come on, China itself is like 30% of the worlds population of course they're going to try and be able to sell more product. It comes down to profit.

Okay so back to topic because I was extremely off topic. If you're talking about the inter workings of a business I don't let that necessarily stop me from buying a product. I definitely don't judge others for it. I won't lie either but if a company does have poor ethics or only caters to a certain type of client than I may be a tad influenced to not buy it. But overall, I don't care what other people buy with their money. I just don't have enough care in the world to voice my opinion on what people buy. I certainly don't give a flying care if someone has an opinion on makeup brands I buy. The example company lime crime is still one of my favorites! Anyways, sorry my comment above was way off.

I appreciate what you said Meagan and Aurora! You have a bring up the point that some brands have amazing products but don't necessarily reflect your personal views (like mac's legal responsibility in order to cater to China's makeup consumers.) Personally I don't judge users of lime crime or JSC, I have just decided to not buy any of their products.

I have sensitive skin and can't use any old products on my face - and I found that out the hard way with horrible break outs from certain products - I realized I'm sensitive to a lot of the synthetic preservatives in most drugstore makeup products - at least my skin is sensitive to them - so I can only buy certain brands that don't use those specific ingredients - and I also try to support more cruelty free brands as well as more natural brands since they don't contain those preservatives - I'm always conscious about what companies get my money - and I try to do my research - but it's hard to find products that have everything I do want and nothing I don't want - some brands claim to be cruelty free but are owned by a parent company (like lo'real) that do test on animals - so are they really cruelty free? Then with natural brands - not all natural products are good for skin - like citric acid is in a good amount of skincare and makeup products but it can make your skin sensitive to the sun and end up damaging it - like the IT cosmetics cc cream has citric acid in it but everybody on BL is always raving about it - but I'm hesitant to try it due to the horrible (IMO) ingredient list - and that's how I am with a lot of products that people claim to be "great" but then I read the ingredients and can't bring myself to put those things on my skin... But that's just me - and I don't judge people who buy things that I don't buy - to each their own - in any case that's how I spend my money not only on makeup but on anything I buy - I always do my research and search for public opinions before buying - that's just the kind of shopper I am personally
