I really don't want to buy a kit so does anyone have recommendations on eyeshadows that are great colors for contouring tan/olive skin?

I've heard some using the shade, NAKED 2 which is one of the eye shadows in the NAKED BASICS Palette. The original BASICS with the 6 shadows.

Try looking into the NYX Taupe blush.

You look more "medium" colored than "Tan" IMO.

I think the NYX eyeshadow in "Happy Hour" would be a good one to use since it's a cool toned brown.

Now, I know some people define "olive" skin as being "tan" or "golden" but lately myself, and others see "olive" has having a green tone to the skin (anyone from very light to quite deep can have that olive/green cast to the skin it's not only specific to one color)
With that being said, if you are olive then I'd try something more greyish like "over the taupe" by NYX

Nyx taupe works great for me. I know a LOT of people disagree and say it doesn't have the right undertone to work as a contour color but it works great for me. Looks like shadows, not orange or dirty looking:)

You should check out Makeup Geek, they have individual contour shade and very inexpensive! if you plan on buying and eyeshadow to do it, it's worth checking these out instead (probably the same price as an eyeshadow depending on where you get it )

If you have the Maybelline the Nudes palette, the matte kind of purpley-taupe color in the top row mimics natural shadow pretty well. It's in a small pan but it would be easy to use if you already have it on hand.

It really depends on your skin tone like Aurora said above, although you're going to want to pick something that is more cool toned over a really warm product (the latter is usually used for bronzing, warming up the face). I personally enjoy using the Almay Shadow Softy in the shade 130 Hot Fudge, it gives great results :)
