Lately I've noticed that I have scalp buildup and its incredibly itchy. I think its from my hard water. I just tried a sugar and conditioner scrub followed by a vinegar rinse but the vinegar smell really gets me. Does anyone know any better DIY scalp buildup treatments or maybe one I can get in the store?

Like the above comment, Neutrogena anti-residue shampoo. Smells like dog shampoo but its the best on the market for clarifying hair gunk. You can get it at any drugstore for about $10

okay you have to fix your hard water it will cause damaged hair. you can purchase a water filter and look into other methods. if you have a refrigerator that makes ice and filters water i would get a large container for rinsing if you cant fix your water problem or after your shampoo try to get bottled water and rinse after turning your shower off. i had a visit to a friend who lives in ny and she had horrible hard water that there was powder when the water fried my hair was a mess so you can have it worst. i think you should go for a clarifying shampoo hard water or not you should always have these babies as a part of your hair routine. this will take out your buildup but i wouldnt wash my hair with this it can be drying so use that once a week or so make sure your clarifying shampoo is clear therefor it will take out your residue well. use argan oil for sweet smelling locks because when i washed my hair with hard water my hair smelled and felt weighed down. good luck.

Baking soda works best as a DIY clarifying agent. You can mix about 1 tablespoon into about a pint of water and then pour that into your hair. Gently massage your scalp and you can feel the buildup coming off. Rinse thoroughly and then you can use any conditioner (since baking soda can be very drying!) or use vinegar and water as a conditioner. Make sure all the baking soda is washed out before using any vinegar. You can also put about 1 tsp of baking soda in your regular shampoo instead of the water. This way you can get the sudsy feeling we all love. Hope it helps!

Hey Maria, I'm havig the exact same problem. May I know if neutrogena has worked for you? How about the sugar/conditioner you mentioned - Did it work, minus the vinegar smell?
