All the time...but I think you should take such comments from friends with a light heart. I'm an old school metalhead with gothabilly tendencirs. I have had bangs forever...when almost Noone had them (fringe) and got poked fun at..as well as my black clothes in summer, but the truth is that I'm comfortable in my own skin and wear what I dig because you have to be true to yourself. Don't overthink it, hun. One day you'll look back and wonder why you ever gave this a second thought. Trust me on this one. My best to you.

People get labeled here all the time. for example if you have unnatural color in your hair your "scene"

I've been called goth and emo, as well as a "gypsy girl" when I'm dressed more bohemian. I just laugh it off because I know these labels don't actually mean anything. People will always make snap judgements about you and generalize based on your appearance, especially if you come across as "different," that's not something that will change. Their perception of you isn't based on who you really are as a person though and you have to remember that. If you wore more polo shirts and whatever they'd label you as preppy. I've always hated labels. It seems silly to me when people actually label themselves. I get that "emo" has negative connotations, but try not to take it so seriously. If it really bothers you when a friend makes a comment like that, challenge it! Ask him for his definition of "emo" and why wearing a certain color means you fit that definition. Does having a favorite color really say anything about who you are? Maybe your friend will rethink it and realize how silly the labeling is :)

Yeah people get labeled a lot here specially the emo/goth label. Its just not the color though I mean some girls can dress all in black to go to work and they simply look fashionable. Its the style. Black hair plus dark make up plus piercings plus a skirt over a legging are all items with punk influences which mixed with black gives you the emo style. So that's why people probably are confused. Now, I'm not saying that it's ok to label people, one should feel free to do whatever they want to their own appearance, but as an advice, it's ok to have tastes and things you like, but don't stay in that tiny comfort zone. As you said you are trying, keep pushing yourself into trying new things because in the end you only end up missing on trends and styles and just experiences only because a color? Not worth it!

Girl just say your contemporary modern. Change the way they look at all black outfits. Give them a new definition on what an all black look looks like. All it takes is changing their viewpoint which is hard at first but showing them examples definitely helps.

Haha thats denmark for you right! Narrow minded is our thing haha! It happens in any city here I think, if people look diffrent then we notice! In a smaller city you just look diffrent much easier - When I lived in Aalborg everyone looks diffrent so no one cares! Now in Roskilde people don't really wear makeup so I stick out! At my uni (Ruc) the trend is very natural flower child and people look at me like I'm the biggest barbie in the world haha!

Don't worry shannie. I know what you mean. I'm 29 in september and get called emo/goth all of the time because I have really pale skin and dark hair. yes I wear black but thats because I suit it. and all of the people who teased me started wearing skulls and black clothes because those clothes suddenly became fashionable. but you know what...f**k them. they can say what they want. and if looking like a goth scares them enough to leave me at peace then fine ;)

That sounds large to me! Growing up my town was just over 3,000 people. Everyone thought I was lesbian simply because I liked my hair short.

It's crazy to because I'm actually from Germany and even there the style is mixed and everything is pretty widely excepted but I'm also from nurnburg which is a good sized city.

You must always own who you are. Others see a lack of confidence and they will naturally seek out weKness..as is a hunt and prey mentality. Most likely those girls getting compliments are exuding confidence in their style and statements...even when they're challenged by society's norms. If you choose a look that stands out, you must be prepared for the attention it draws...including the criticism. I'm in a huge city and I still get snarky remarks occassionally, but I also get compliments. Perhaps you are taking this boy's opinion a bit too much to heart. How well do you know him? Have you tried using humor in such situations?

Off topic but I am so jealous you live in Denmark. I'm of Scandinavian (mostly Danish) descent and I've always wanted to go there! Anyway, I live in Utah and I'm not of the predominant religion--it's hard because I definitely stick out when I wear tank tops or with all my piercings and tattoo showing. But I don't care. I'm me.

Sorry, I'm really exhausted and I can't really type a whole paragraph right now on me relating to this, but seriously you are so beautiful it's unreal. Just had to put that out there, lol.

No I've never been to Denmark. My great grandparents on 3 of my 4 sides came from Denmark (and Sweden and Norway, but mostly Sweden) joined a church and came to America. I'm British as well, but I look like my Scandinavian sides more. People always comment on my grey blue eyes.

I was under the impression this was a friend. I think he was rude and immature under such circumstances. Complete lack of manners! He's obviously socially inept. So glad you feel better now. I often joke that I'm eMo because of my sensitive side...but for someone you are not close with to say such a thing based on boots and pants is absurd. He's got to go!
