I have never been the type to care about nails. I've always neglected them and recently I decided I'd love to have nice healthy nails. the only problem is that I don't know how to properly take care of my nails and how do I revive/heal the ones I've neglected for so long..

questions:

1.) what are some nail care essentials?
- specific products & price range
2.) how long will it take to grow out nice healthy nails?
3.) nail care order?
- what comes first when it comes from down to taking care of your nails
4.) should I get professional care or can I buy products myself and do it at home?
- if I should get them professionally done, about how much should it cost me

once I get nice pretty nails:

1.) what kinds of nail designs should I do?
- something basic preferably
- specific nail polish colors?
2.) which nail shape is flattering and doesn't take high maintenance?

here's a picture of my nails. they aren't awful, but they are kind of weak and I get hangnails a lot..

Okay,

1. You absolutely need a good cuticle oil and hand cream. I use the RMS Lip & Skin balm and then over top of that I put the Body Shop Almond hand cream. It works like a charm. Keeping your cuticles hydrated is really the most important thing, your hands won't look pretty and your nails won't grow as nicely if you don't keep them hydrated. Also, get crystal nail files instead of the stupid cardboard ones from Target or wherever, which will split your nails. The cardboard ones are not nearly a fine enough grit to file your nails nicely.

2. This depends on your body, some people's nails grow faster than others. Mine have been growing out from nothing for three weeks and they're past my fingertips now.

3. push back your cuticles (and cut them if that's what you want to do), file your nails all in one direction, put on cuticle oil, apply hand cream.

4. I don't believe in professional manicures because they always file my nails weirdly, so I do it myself and it works out fine.

and as for flattering nail shapes, I find that square nails with rounded corners are by far the easiest in terms of upkeep. definitely look at http://loodieloodieloodie.blogspot.com/ because she is an incredible wealth of nailcare information.

Hannah has it covered! Only thing I can think of to add, is different nail shapes flatter different people. The easiest way to tell what will flatter your hand, is to look at your Nail bed. If it's square, square nails will be more flattering. If they're round, which in my opinion yours are, then rounded nails will be most flattering :) of course this isn't a rule, but just a tip, so if you want square nails, go for it!
