I definitely don't use this palette alone, I like to add warmer tones with my cool tones (not always but lately) These were designed for very soft looks which may be where some of your disappointment is. If you truly dislike the product return it.
Yes you can return it once used, you must be within the 30 day return policy and they will damage out the product.

Unfortunately I don't think in the UK that they allow you to return makeup :( I have some single shadows and don't think they are that pigmented
