So lately I've been having girls asking me to do make up for their weddings and proms but I'm no professional. I've done one wedding and a few proms for friends and now other people are asking me to do it too. I don't want to make a career out of it but it's fun for the extra cash but I have many questions!

First off. Is it okay to use your pallets on other people? I have a few high end ones that people love but they are my dailys. Is there a way I can clean them for other people??

Same thing goes for brushes. I use baby soap and Mary Kay brush cleaner which is supposed to disinfect, is that enough? I can't really afford to buy a new brush set when it's a thing I don't do very often!

How much do you generally charge? I've been paid usually $30 per person which I normally just tell them to make me an offer and say okay. :p

And lastly, for foundation is it okay to have them bring their own? I have a few different shades from Mary Kay I've used as samples on people but now I'm not doing that anymore and don't have every shade. I know people of all skin tones and types so I'm worried about not having one that would suit their needs. Is there a foundation pallet or something I should purchase?

You can disinfect your pallets with 99% alcohol. also by wiping them down after each use then spray 99% alcohol on them. as for brushes you need to use a disinfecting cleaner Mary Kay does make a nice brush cleaner. I also spray mine with 99% alcohol as well. and if you don't want to do it all the time then asking them to have there own foundation won't be that bad. you can go on BH cosmetics and other makeup sites that have foundation pallets.
I charge quite a but more than you but I am a licensed cosmetologist as well a makeup artist. I have beem doing makeup since I was 15. also keep in mind since you are not the one supplying all the products that will be another reason to go down in price. make sure you have mascara wands and lip brush's, as well as a mascara you haven't used before that you specifically use to put on clients and use disposable wands with. There are so many cautions you need to take. so that you don't spread any infections or viruses or anything.

How much you charge depends on your expert level, where you live, and amount of people. I live in a high volume city with a lot of demand for what we do. I never charge less than $75 and that's assuming they come to me. On a normal day with travel, time, and my kit fee I am paid $125 for one person and I'll add in a touch up. Weddings all depend on how many and how much time. I usually charge a day rate for scenarios like this. Again your rates should be dependent on your personal knowledge, skill, and what others are offering in the area. as a well decorated mac artist, I started my prices high and people pay them. You can always drop rates but it's so much higher to raise them. I learned this while working with my husband doing his photography. Have pride in your work and set your price, don't let others do it for you.

As far as foundations go, you don't need every color. Find products that photograph well and get one or two shades up and down that you may need. For those that are in-between customize a shade for them by mixing two together.

Seems like your other questions were already answered so I'll stop here.

Thank you ladies so much!! Your all awesome! I do have a mascara and extra wands. As far as experience I'm pretty much self taught and don't really have much training other than what I've done with Mary Kay! So I'm never sure what to charge. The area I'm in doesn't really have much MUA needs but I will be moving to Seattle soon so I was thinking of doing it more there if I'm able to. What would you say would be a good price to charge? What are some good base shades you would recommend for foundation? And also for concealer? I haven't really thought much about doing this but this week I've been asked to do a bridal party and the bride's make up as well as a proms so I figured I might as well get a few necessities.

Thanks for the extra info Jacqueline. I guess I've always heard of use of product called a kit fee for many years from many artists that I personally know. Due to their high amount of yearly revenue I assumed their terminology was correct, I'll be throwing those words out the window. No disrespect taken. I learned something that I should've known a long time ago.

Thank you guys for all your information! I really appreciate it! I'll definitely set a price and stick with it from now on. Once I get a professional foundation kit I'll probably raise the price to cover the products. Thanks so much!
