Hello again everyone. Does anyone know the starting rate for cosmetics sales associates? Does it depend on the line you're hired to work with? Thank you.

Its not based on what line you work for. It can range anywhere from $10 to $12 bucks and its off the draw system. Out earn your hourly you get your commission which will be more than your hourly. And hourly pay is also a regional thing as well.

Thank you. $12 sounds like a summer job's pay. They must make quite a bit on commissions.

12 sounds pretty good for retail. When some people make 10.70 an hour and get excited over a 20 cent raise.
Sounds like s decent starting pay

Wow.. that's such a stressful job and that's such low pay.. I think you have to call and find out!
My mom got paid minimum wage at Macy's working retail.. , but at Nordstorm working for the Kiehl's booth she gets paid $24.00/Hour. I also have a friend that works selling perfume at Macy's and she get's paid $15.00/hourly, and when she worked at Nordstrom she got paid $17.00/hour. It varies for the Brand you work for.. but the actual stores themselves pay low!

Store I worked at didn't pay myself or the other associates low. I worked at the Nordies just blocks away from Beverly Hills in the late 90's. Its all a regional thing and dependent on the state and even the city in which the store is located due to living wage laws (Santa Monica,CA is a prime example). If you are eyeing another dept store and comparing the two I highly advise sticking with Nordies and why not just go straight to HR and get a true breakdown of pay if they have offered you employment?

I do intend to ask HR when they contact me. I'm here to seek information so I know what a fair amount is and what I should ask for. Thank you ladies.thats pretty good Kitty. Did she have prior experience? I'll be at La Mer's counter and I'm pretty excited. I've been an RN for over 5 years and though the pay is very good I don't love it. I just did an advance makeup course and this is my passion. I know I won't be applying makeup much but I prefer this environment. I originally told them MAC but they but they thought that counter suited me better. They've been interviewing for that position for over a year and rejected everyone else so I'm please I was chosen for it. I just want to have an idea of pay range. Thank you all.

My mom has 20 years of working in retail. However, she is not fluent at english and the last time she worked retail was in June of 1995. As for MAC, my local Bloomingdales offered me $15/hour ( Thats with me having no work XP ) so MAC may make a similar offer. Congratulations on the position, though. So many are dying to work with MAC!

Thank you. That's not bad at all. It's La Mer though not MAC, I know a lot of people love MAC but I'm hoping since it's the same company I can sell the line. Was that with commission? I've read that you get a lesser amount if you're getting commission as well. I'm clueless as you've probably realized. Thank you for all the response.

La Mer is high end, so they may offer you a good pay since it can be harder to sell. At the brands that were higher end at my Nordstrom ( such as Guerlain, Tom Ford, etc. ) are typically more expensive.. not as popular as most people don't want to drop $50.00 on lipstick and $70.00 on eye shadow so those usually paid the most but they also expected a quota you had to meet. The Kiehl's booth goal was to reach $1200.00, and sometimes she didn't always reach it but she would get really close!
