I'm naturally a blonde and I went dark brown a while back now. The problem is that my roots are badly overgrown and I'm on a tight budget. Every time I've dyed my hair I've got it done professionally, so my question is: Is there a really big difference between dying it professionally and dying it from a box?

Oh yes huge difference! You can never trust a box! The color usually turns out weird or patchy and it just isn't pretty. I say never ever ever dye your hair from a box, always go to a professional

Most professionals will tell you that there's a difference, but in my opinion, it's all the same. Just be sure to match the color correctly and get every piece that's overgrown and you'll be fine. In my opinion, dye isn't really that damaging, it's mainly the bleach. A hair mask or two after you dye and you'll be fine. I've used box dye on my hair for years and my hair is fine. The one time I went to the salon to get it done, my hair got completely jacked. But that's probably because they suck at their job.

My hair has never come out a different color than what the box said. Except one time I bought a CLEARANCE box dye and it said brown but it was blaaack haha.

I agree with Shanae. I don't notice a difference at all and I've gone through plenty of box dyes and plenty of dye appointments. The only thing I don't think you should do on your own is bleach, but seeing as it's just dye, you'll be fine and so will the color.

With you being dark brown it shouldn't be a big difference.

No. Especially if you're going darker, it's nbd.

If you know how to take care of your color, you should be fine. Hair masks will help if it dries your hair out a bit, which is won't do much drying unless you dye it multiple times at once or you don't take care of your hair.

Thank you ladies, your advice has been super helpful, I think I'll give the box a shot(:

I'd just ask your stylist what color she used and go to a professional beauty store and buy it yourself and touch it up. Works good plus you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars.

Go to Sally's and you are only depositing color so get a brown that you like and get only a 10 volume developer. I like to use ion. Argan oil brand is also good.

I dye my hair from a box every time and it never gets blotchy or looks bad. I've been coloring my hair for five years lol. Yes, sometimes the color will be a little off fron what the bix says, but I have never had a problem with that. I have gotten my hair done at a salon twice, and actualky prefer box dye.
