People always say not to do diy face masks and I was wondering why? It seems like using natural ingredients would be better for you. I understand things baking soda, cinnamon or lemon because that would probably irritate your face but what about other things?

I never heard of bad natural face masks, I used to do banana and oatmeal face masks, I can only think that some skin might be too sensitive and have a bad reaction to it

It's not that it's bad, it's just that they don't typically work as well. The masks in stores are usually more effective. Also, with any mask you need to be careful and do your research about the ingredients. This goes for DIY and store bought masks. Overall I'm sure some DIY mask work for some people, but it's just generally going to do nothing.

I don't think it's bad I've been doing the honey sugar and lemon mask and I think it's actually helping my skin!

The things you listed are definitely the no-no's, which should never be used on the skin, while some things, like honey for example, should be spot tested before putting all over your face because it can cause a reaction even if you're not allergic to honey.
In my opinion it's just better to use proper skin care products rather than do more harm than good with DIYs.

A lot of ingredients in DIYs are actually horrible for your skin. Citrus fruits, for example, are phototoxic and will make your skin more sensitive to light, and can actually burn your skin because they're incredibly acidic. Honey contains bee pollen which can irritate the skin even if you're not allergic to bees, and that has happened to girls on here before. Other commonly used skin things: cinnamon, which is super irritating and inflammatory (that's why it's used in a lot of lip plumpers, it irritates the skin of your lips so they swell), sugar scrubs: sugar has rough particles that will tear the skin of your face (it's okay on the legs though). Just do your research when you feel like you want to put something on your face :)

I feel like there is a lot of false information in diy skincare. I used to do a lot of diy mask and they just made my skin soo much worse. Most of the diys I've seen/read do more harm then good, like Alexis said.

I agree with Hannah. Using anything harsh on your face, which is what a lot of diys call for, is just plain out idiotic.

A lot of people say it's bad because they don't do their research on it and make sure to patch test beforehand. I have insanely sensitive skin and can't use a lot of skincare and makeup products. diy skincare has been a lifesaver for me. It's natural and good for your skin with no additives or irritants. I'm all for it and I make my own face masks, scrubs, soap, body lotion, etc.
