I want to let my hair grow for a while more, them I want to donate 8-10 inches. Do most donation places actually use the hair and give it to sick and\or hairless people? Or does it go to waste and just get thrown away most of the time? Thank you!

I have heard great things about locks of love. I have never used them personally but I would think it is a reliable place to donate your hair.

I did it a few weeks ago and it is so worth it, just Google the charity online and see if they're registered with any hairdressers near you because you can get it done for free then :)

I've donated thru there before. As long as your hair doesn't have any chemical (I.e. hair dyed or highlight) then they will have a use for it.

If you say you want to donate it to locks of love and the hair salon you go to sponsors then then it won't go to waste! I donated my 10 inches when I was 6 to them!

I donated my hair a few years ago and they sent me a picture of the wig they made, I forget who it was with though

Locks of love, I recommend to go on their website and print out a donation form and after you cut your hair mail it yourself. they accept color and/or perm hair.

I donated my hair to locks of love in August! As long as your hair meets the criteria, they won't get rid of it.

Locks of Love is a sketchy company. They waste ALOT of hair that is donated to them. they also sell donated hair to defray operating costs. They charge based on your income and will actually turn away cancer patients. a lot of their wigs go to kids with alopecia (which is still a good cause but IMHO any child with no hair deserves a wig). Pantene has a great program and does not charge for wigs, as does wigs for kids. check out those before locks of love.

Agree with kelly.. Also check out your local hospitals. We have a local cancer treatment center in my city and they have an on site wig maker. They accept all kinds of hair, and make tons of (free) wigs for any cancer patients. They accept any amount that can make a wig. I gave the two braids from having my sides shaved, one was a light purple and the other was blue. They accepted it and said "this will make for quite a few children's cute funky streaks or stylish accent braids". They also accept men's hair as long as it's longer than two inches (to make business cuts for boys) and they're non profit. I don't know if you have a place like that. But I would look into it, and call around hospitals and local wig maker stores. They might take in hair and do nonprofit wigs for donation to treatment centers.
