You'll definitely have to lighten your hair a bit. Are you asking for tips on how to achieve it or tips on how to maintain the color once it's there?

You'll have to lighten your hair, probably not a ton but I'm not an authority on DIY haircoloring. Personally I'd see a professional.

I found on Pinterest that you can lighten your hair with cinnamon, lemon and your conditioner and it lightened quite a bit, I haven't tried it and if I were I would definitely strand test it before doing it on my whole head.

Try loreal hicolor hilights. It dyed my dark brown hair bright red without additional bleaching because the lightening agent is already in the dye

Lemon will damage your hair. At sally's l'oreal highcolor lift for dark hair and Vol 30 peroxide, no bleaching needed.

About 4 years ago I used it when it was time to retouch my roots I used the color only in my roots and ion color brights (red) mix with conditioner to refresh the red.
Also (at sally's) l'oreal just released Chroma true reds I saw the yesterday the colors are nice they said they are high intensity shades that deliver vibrant true red results on light, dark and 100% gray hair.

I agree with the loreal hilights, but make sure you want to be red for a long time, because the only way to get rid of it is by going darker, and you'll never get An ash toned color till you cut it off. It is permanent, it fades, but the color in the hair shaft is permanently red tinted.

When I used the Loreal high color in magenta, it came out so blotchy and terrible. My roots were darker than the rest of my hair which made no sense, and then I used the color Red of the same brand and my roots came out waaay too bright. In the end The rest of my hair was a natural black with red tint. I used 30 vol developer and followed all of the directions. I did this 4 different times with 2 weeks in between and I just dyed my hair back to black because it looked so bad.

Allie - your roots lift quicker because they're dyed less and the heat from your head processes it quicker so therefore turn out most bright. The box instructions go for virgin hair. In the future, if your hair is colored but your roots aren't as much, dye the ends upwards.

I did start from the bottom.

Must have just been timing then, it's hard to get right how long the roots need and how long the ends need. I personally never had that problem, on myself or when I've used it on others. But hair always reacts differently
