The Great Beauty Subscription Debate!

Sort By

I've been wanting to get another beauty subscription service (I used to get Beauty Box 5, which I liked but not enough to start getting it again).

I was thinking about getting Ipsy but I've heard from others that they've unsubscribed because they were unhappy with the products they were receiving.

I'm interested in mainly makeup but I'm not opposed to getting skincare and hair products as well.

Subscription suggestions and reviews would be greatly appreciated (:

Boxycharm is my favorite! It's a bit more expensive at $21, but you do get your money's worth in products. In the past I've gotten a few Tarte items as well as a pair of mink lashes. Sometimes there will be a hair or skin product, but it's mainly makeup.
I have Ipsy as well and haven't cancelled it yet. I do get repeat products often that I never use. The bags you get are really cute, though. Probably why I haven't cancelled yet

Thank you, Michelle! I'm on the fence about Boxycharm because of the price but it seems like a better option. Honestly I don't like the fact that you get a makeup bag every time for Ipsy, I have enough makeup bags :P

I have had my ipsy bag for over a year now and I still like it. There are some products that I receive that go straight to a drawer and I give them away later. Overall, I am happy with it and I give my nieces the bags at Christmas time filled with little nail polishes, candy, and lip gloss. They think it's their own ipsy bag. I just started receiving birchbox, but it is to early to tell much yet other than I like the point system better and the first box was good.

It is a bit expensive, but I'm working full time now, so it's how I treat myself. That's my excuse for everything lol
I'm probably just a bag hoarder...😰

Thank you, Samantha! (:

Michelle, I've gotten a better job with better pay so the $21 doesn't seem as extreme as I used to think it was (:

I would definitely recommend birchbox over ipsy! Ipsy was kinda cool but I kept receiving things I didn't like, like sparkly lipgloss. Birchbox just seems more sophisticated to me... But most importantly their point system is unreal! 50 for any person you subscribe. 10 every time you do a review on one of your samples. So 100 pts is $10 in their shop! I buy all my makeup from there because it's tax free and free shipping (I'm an ace which is like a VIP member) I like to save up points and use them on something big! Got my clarisonic for 70 instead of 99. Their customer service rocks too. They accidentally sent me the wrong clarisonic head so the sent me the correct one for free and j got to keep the other one! One time I had a broken sample in my box so instead or replacing that sample they sent me a whole new box!! After trying both, I will definitely stay w birchbox!

I love ipsy. I've had it for three years. I've learned if you rate the products you get what you want.at least it has worked with me.

Thank you, Cindy (:

Hey Alexis what did you like about your previous box subscription?

Elizabeth, I like that it was a lot of smaller/indie brands that I hadn't heard of before and would've never tried on my own (:

I have heard some great reviews on birchbox customer service practice if things arrive broken.

Birchbox also has men's products ( their own box if they want) that has gotten my boyfriend involved in the whole process.

I personally think ipsy is worth $10 if you love and use every product you get. I've had it since March, I've never had a box where I've loved each product, so therefore I'm only using two products at the most out of each bag, which in the end.. probably isn't worth $10. I like it but once I get a job, I'm ditching it for boxycharm without a doubt.

If you are looking for a cheap option birchbox and ipsy are the two top dogs XD
I was subscribed to both but I prefer ipsy. I've always gotten at least one full size product and every product allows me to try something new OR a product from a brand I can't really afford. None of these more affordable beauty boxes though are for people who already own a lot of makeup. It's much harder to get new products when you already own a lot; that's when I see people get the most frustrated. The customer service with ipsy is also spot on. Also remember, if the bag isn't up to your perfect standard that most of these products they don't have a choice in giving. $10 isn't enough to cover the price of a bag and still make a profit. Many of the products they receive are free samples companies give them so we can try their products. This is why you may sometimes get a color you don't really use or a product you already own. For these, I just keep them sealed and for the last 3 years I've been able to make a small sample basket for 1 or 2 friends around Christmas time. It's a great present if you just put like 3 products you never used in. :) I've had my ipsy bag for 3 years now and I still love it. I'd say try it out and unsubscribe if you don't like it

However, if you have a more unlimited budget a more pricy box might be what you're looking for. By it being more expensive they have the ability to perks ally lick out different products and purchase them while still making a decent profit. It's all s numbers game so the more you pay, the more high end your box is going to be...

Thank you, everyone (:

I had birchbox and ipsy. I canceled my birchbox because the products were such a tiny like 1 use size. in my opinion, ipsy is a better deal.

I had both ipsy and birchbox. Tho the point system was good on birchbox you never rly get makeup more skincare. Ipsy is more makeup and I love ipsy but ima try boxycharm..I've heard boxycharm is the best.

I kind of recommend birchbox too. Their point system is amazing. I had both ipsy and birchbox for a while and stuck with ipsy, but now wish I had switched. Ipsy I got the same products over and over. My lipstick was damaged once and they sent me a "replacement" starlooks lip gloss, which I hate. I got face or skin care every time at least 1 product which I never use. If they send eye shadows they're tiny and always gold bronze shade. They don't care about your skin tone if sending foundation or concealer. Just my experience!
