I'm doing a hair/makeup/beauty course this year as I'm still only in highschool. But I was wondering if it was difficult to get into these kind of jobs?
Hi Chelsea, I'm Emily and I am a professional hairstylist! I went to a cosmetology school shortly after graduating from high school...it was a fantastic experience that you will love and learn from! When I graduated it didn't take long to find a job/career! But my advice to you is start doing your research! Look up different salons and make a pro and con list! You will want to find a salon or store that will offer you benefits, good pay, and will pay your your extra training you may need!
If you are near an Ulta Beauty I would look into that store/salon! They are growing as an industry extremely fast and the training you can do is incredible! I currently work there as a stylist in the salon...and I don't plan on leaving there anytime soon! They are fantastic!
Hope this was helpful! And please ask any questions if you have any!

Hi Chelsea, It's so great that you are taking this in high school, I went after I graduated and wished I had gone earlier. Does the course you are taking in high school allow you to test for your cosmetology license? If you want to do hair for tv or films you will have to work towards getting into the union and for that you will need your license. You can start out by doing local work, film school pieces, low-budget indie films and then work your way up. It's not as hard as it sounds if it's something you want... Let me know if you have any questions, happy to help!
Hi Tanya, I'm in year 9 at an Australian school. And instead of attending school I go off to TAFE one day a week instead. The course goes until I finish school so another 3 years. After the three years I come out qualified (i think that was the wrong spelling, sorry). I was just wondering what you ment when you said i would have to get into the union? thanks so much, i really appreciate your help!!
Hi Chelsea, I didn't realize you were in Australia, you can disregard my answer. In the States to work in tv or film you have to join the makeup & hairstylists union. I am really not sure if they have anything like that there to equate it too. What you can do is call your local production companies or tv news stations. Ask to speak with someone in the hair & makeup department and they can better answer this for you. You will probably have to start out working the same way, e.g. Indie films, then bigger budget stuff but I would expect the licensing and unions to be a bit different. Hope that helps.
I'm a bit curious now. I will reach out to a model that I know (who is also from Australia) and ask her if she knows. What part of Australia are you from?
