What to wear: UK graduation.

I have my graduation ceremony next month in the north of England next month and need some guidance on what to wear please, I'm a dress person and hate wearing trousers and suits, the gown is black with a dark red hood, they usually recommend you wear something with buttons to attach the loop of hood to but I really want to wear a dress so will have to safety pin the loop of the hood to the dress, I wasn't looking to spend more than £30/£40 thanks :) xx
