So recently I cut my hair to get it back to healthy and needless to say I am sick of wearing my hair curly. How often can I straighten it without it splitting and breaking. I use chi iron guard heat protecting spray every time I straighten. Please help!!

If you can only shampoo once a week and use a serum after flat ironing so it stays straight and you can do it less and cause less damage

I think if you take care of your hair and you use heat protectant spray and a shampoo/conditioner designed for your need and you don't over do it you should be fine.

Straightening usually isn't the only culprit to cause damage and you can prevent heat damage easily with a heat protectant spray and following up any heat application with a sealant or moisturizing oil - I like super skinny serum by Paul Mitchell and their heat seal protectant spray - but other oils you can use are jojoba and argon oils - just use them on the ends to prevent dryness - otherwise I would try washing your hair less (2-3 times a week if you can) and then use a hair mask once a week - the secret to healthy hair is taking care of it before you see the damage - as opposed to trying to fix it afterwards - if you are really worried about it - I would only straighten once a week and then just not wash it to keep it straight for a few days

I agree with Diana!!:) paul mitchell skinny serum is life!! I use it after I take a shower on damp hair and the next day spray my hair with the tresemme hair protectant and then apply a frizz product by pault mitchell??

With heat protectant you should be fine. Just remember that curly hair is naturally dry, and heat will dry it out more, so make sure you bump up your masks/conditioning treatments. And skip washes if you can!

I just don't understand why my hair is prone to damage. I use heat protectant I only wash every 4 to 5 days and I use oil after k straighten. It never fails my hair always splits and breaks.

Mine is the same way, it's extremely frustrating! I can't do anything to my hair (heat or dye) without it freaking out. Now I'm just trying to learn to like it naturally. Anyway, because you're naturally curly and prone to breakage, it might actually be better for your hair to co-wash every other day, and do a deep conditioning mask 3-4 times a week. Most directions will say 1-2 days a week, but it sounds like you could use all the moisture you can get!

I really can and its quite annoying. Does anyone know of shampoo conditioner combos that are for extremely dry hair? I use moisturizing sulfate free shampoo but it seems like it just drys my hair out. Come to think of it all sulfate free shampoos I've used dry me out. The only thing that didn't was horse shampoo but it did cause a lot of build up after a while.

I like the moisture line by Paul Mitchell - you can buy it cheap on drugstore.com.

I have straight hair but it used to break. My go to oil is Pro Naturals Moroccan argan oil leave in treatment. I use 1 drop per section rubbed to the ends of my hair (short pixie style) and only halfway up the shaft after shampoo and before drying and straightening.
