My wardrobe's bulging with stuff I don't wear or just doesn't fit! So I'm looking to have a clear out and make a capsule wardrobe to build on.

What are your tips for having a good clear out?

What are the essentials that you think every woman needs in her wardrobe?

Whenever I clear out my closet, I hang everything up with the hangers facing backwards. Once I wear something, I hang it back up with the hanger facing normally. This helps me to see what items I don't wear on a regular basis. I go through what I haven't worn and try to narrow the pile down. I'm such a hoarder at times. I really struggle to get rid of things.
My essentials would be a little black dress, a going out dress, black trousers, a blazer, well fitting dark wash jeans, black jeans, a black skirt, blouses that can be dressed up or down, sweaters (it's cold where I live), and the rest of your basic layering pieces. This includes camisoles, t shirts, cardigans, etc. From here, you can add more statement pieces. I can't give advice on shoes because I have a little bit of an obsession :)

If I haven't worn it in the past 8 months, it goes. If it is too big and not worth tailoring...it also goes. I admit, I always keep 2 or 3 favs that are a bit small ti motivate me, but if they have been there over s year, those also go. Offering purged goods to friends and donating the rest, which is tax deductable means everybody wins.

If you have duplicates, kerp the one you wear the most.
