Hey ladies!
I have naturally light-medium brown hair with red undertones. I have been wanting to colour my hair a burgundy red colour for a few years, but I am in university and cannot afford to constantly getting it touched up. (Also I hate using boxes dyes, to much can go wrong 😝). Does anyone have experience with this kind of hair colour and how often it needs to be redone or upkeep needs to happen? As an alternative I was considering getting red lowlights.

When I had reddish burgundy hair I had to redo it once every 6-8 weeks. I used the brand Loreal Hicolor highlights, purchased from Sally beauty, and mixed the red and magenta colors to create my own kind of bright red. I would only shampoo my hair every 3rd day, and always used a red shampoo and conditioner to help it not fade as fast, using dry shampoo on 2nd day to help me not look as greasy. Also make sure to only wet your hair with the coldest water that you can tolerate because warm and hot water make it fade super fast. The one major issue I had with it was that every time I got my hair wet, even with icy cold water, it would still bleed out pink and stained my clothes and neck, so do think about that with Fall and Winter coming up.

Honestly it really just depends on how well your hair takes color. I can color my hair and wash in cold water (heat is a major no no for red) and use expensive shampoo's and then my hair is back to my natural color after about 3 weeks. But, I know people who can get their hair done and go months with it still looking great. Red is probably the hardest color to keep vibrant but like I mentioned everyones hair is different. I would personally go with some red lowlights and see how you like it and how well it last, then try out an all over red. As far as helping make it last longer wash in cool/coldest water you can stand, don't wash everyday (I still wet mine though), dry shampoos can be your friend, and I really like John Frieda's color glosses, also use sulfate free shampoos and ones targeted for color (I recommend L'Oreal Ever- shampoos & conditoners).
