How do you put together a stylish outfit?

Okay guys, rookie question here, but how do you know what goes with what? I feel like I'm always choosing the wrong combinations of clothes, and so I tend to just wear shirts and jeans to be safe.

As school comes back, I want to look more put together than only shirts and jeans, but I could really use some helpful tips.

Also, my style is usually basics, sometimes vintage, and usually modest, with really any color but neons or hot pink. The only things I won't wear are stomach-exposing shirts and sandals.

Thanks so much!

I totally agree with that! I wear dresses sometimes, too. The unfortunate thing about dresses is that most of the ones I like are sleeveless and I can't wear them in the fall without sweaters.

You can refer to the color wheel to see which colors work and which don't
If I'm wearing a "bold" outfit that day, ill tone down the accessories
Sometimes it helps to pick one piece of clothing as your "main" focus and work around that.
Some clothes are more versatile than others.
Like blue jeans or white clothing can be worn with virtually anything.
Looking at other styles can help you create your own outfit as well!
If you have examples of what you clothes look like, I can make a polyvore outfit if you want :)
And don't worry too much because you'll figure it out eventually ^_^

I wear mostly black so it's easier for me, but I try and incorporate different textures and fabrics so that it adds a different dimension as opposed to solid black. This works with jeans as well. Jeans are the easy part, so if I'm wearing them, I always pick what piece I really want to wrar..whether it be a scarf, sweater, belt or shoes..and work around that piece. So if I have combat boots, for example, will they have ribbon laces? If so, then I know I'm going to cuff my jeans and will need a straighter cut. The ribbons say, okay..we can do a cardi with some skulls on it, but soften it with a lace cami beneath. Now I know I want to include a light jacket, so I grab a thin, pleather with silver zippers..so my jewelry won't be gold...that sort of thing.

I find that if I'm unsure I will look at other similar outfits. I'll try to post a few ideas that I think fit your style and you can always tweak them until you're happy with how they look:)
One thing that is almost fool proof is neutrals. I recommend getting a few basic pieces that you can mix and match

Another great idea is stick to focusing on one piece. Dresses are almost fool proof(just don't wear a striped dress, polka dot jacket and star boots)

This outfit has very versatile pieces. The colored shoes would be worn well with a dress, skirt or jeans/pants. It has a basic baby doll top that would pair well with most bottoms. The jeans are well.. jeans.

Black goes with just about anything. I have the same problem as you, but I can probably give you some tips:)
First of all, I have found that jeans look great with a lot of things
This may be my personal opinion, but I feel that you should not wear a long shirt with a skirt. It looks a little like a weird mismatched dress.
If you have a bold top, wear plain pants (black or white works well) and if you have an ugly shirt that you have to wear for some reason, you could always put a hoodie on overtop.
Lastly, here are some colors that work well together:

Yellow & grey
Navy blue & white
Red & black

I hope I've been helpful!

Have a key color. (black, white, grey, naturals/nudes) than add some kind of statement piece either a scarf, jewellery, a shirt, or cute pants.

(for example, plain black jeans with black heels and a cute navy blue & white halter top. the top is the thing that brings your outfit to life.
another example is: cute patterned shorts, sandals and a plain crop, here the shorts are the thing)

try to only have one main thing. like you wouldn't wear a red shirt, with blue jeans and orange shoes and a black bag (please never wear that)

You could also just google 'cute spring outfits tumblr' or something and it'll come up with a HEAP of cute tumblr outfits :D

(it'll give you inspiration!)

oh and, sorry forgot to add this.. but you should buy shirts or pants (or skirts) that go with a lot of things like deep blue jeans, black, white they are great colors to match things with also for school I'd suggest wearing flats, nikes or something other than heels haha

Matching patterns or color never twice at once cause you want to match in a good way.

Rozberry, thanks for helping me again! Working around one piece is a great idea, thanks for the advice!
Kaleigh, omg THANK YOU!! I adore every outfit you posted, especially the grey one piece with the burgundy booties ❤ I'll be on the lookout for versatile pieces to make outfits like these.
Michelle, I couldn't agree more with you about the long shirt with skirt thing. It always seems a little odd to me. Thank you for your help!
Lydia, those are really great tips, thank you so much! I totally see what you're saying, and tumblr has some of the prettiest outfits I've ever seen!
Tyeesha, good point! Wouldn't want to draw unwanted attention to yourself!
