How much should I expect to pay on average to hire a make-up artist to do my make-up for my wedding day? They would have to travel to the venue so I appreciate that would cost extra.

Hi Alex. I agree with dawn. I am primarily a bridal makeup artist and my price varies from bride to bride. For example, if there is a bridal party then I offer a slight discount and packages but if its the bride alone it would cost more. Also yes traveling to the venue can be pricey unless the artist isn't far from the venue.

In '07 my sister paid $65 for make-up or an up-do. Almost the entire bridal party used this person. (About 5 of us, including herself.) This is in the DMV area.

There are a lot of ladies out there who LOVE to freelance & just enjoy make up as a hobby (for a very reasonable price.) You should definitely look into it. Congratulations on your engagement, Alex! Xxoo.

Before you pay anyone to do your makeup be sure to schedule a trial run. I ended up doing my own makeup since I didnt like the 3 different makeup artists.

Make sure that if you're going with a freelance artist that do this for a "hobby" you are still getting a professional that 1. knows what they are doing and has a comprehensive kit that can accommodate your entire bridal party's skin tones and needs, 2. uses a contract and has reviews/experience/references so you know that they're actually going to show up on your big day. I have worked primarily in the bridal industry for the past 5 years, and I can't tell you how many distraught emails and phone calls I've gotten from brides whose makeup artists bailed on them a week before the wedding b/c something better came along or they just didn't feel like it was a fun "hobby" anymore. I agree with Sharone that you need to do a trial run with them first. Expect to pay for that. Anyone what offers a free trial doesn't understand pricing and will burn out quickly! There's an old saying "If you think hiring a professional is expensive, you should see how much it costs to hire an amateur." Pricing is going to be completely different for every area of the country. Go to www.weddingwire.com or www.theknot.com and search for artist portfolios that speak to you, then contact them for their pricing. This will give you a range for your area of the country. Where I live (DC/VA area) it's $200-245 for the bride alone with my company.
