Its kinda of complicated to explain because of all the different face shapes and the different techniques..I've personally have always used a liquid foundation a shade darker and blended well then used a bronze powder then my blush it sounds like alot but better if you watch a video..it's all about the illusion of it all.I'm old school so I'm not sure if you would understand my info..

In my opinion, it's best to start off at the temple/hairline when contouring, That way you don't have a huge buildup of product just incase you mess up.
Suck in your cheeks & apply the contour powder right in the hollow of your face. It should be directly under your actual cheek bone because what you're doing is creating a fake shadow on your face.
My favorite product to contour with is ELF's matte bronze powder. It's $1 - Granted, it's powdery but it lasts so long on the face!

pointers: suck in your cheeks and apply bronzer ( I use sleek or maybellines) in upward strokes stoke out the bronzer towards ur temples and on top if that use a highlighter I use smashboxs and apply on the meatier part of the cheek. if u want some color, dab on a soft pink or coral blush on the apples of ur cheeks
