I don't think YouTube is going to make you a makeup artist for the celebrities. Celebrities aren't watching YouTube for makeup tips, they already have professional makeup artists that work on them. I don't think that is a realistic way to get discovered. And if anything, not all youtube gurus are celebrity makeup artists. I'd suggest networking, you have to know the right people to get in the business, if you're thinking something like Hollywood. You could start offering services to film students, apply to be the makeup artist for your local theatre group/organization. You have to make business connections to the art and theatre worlds, then build up your experience and resume. You have to start small/low and keep moving up and up.

Make sure you're qualified, experienced and professional. Celebrities don't choose their artists, their PAs do, so you need to keep it professional. You're going to have to do a lot of crappy work before you get well known, but if you treat every client like a celebrity, you'll have a lot more luck.

Work hard to get your skills down and it will happen but you have to really put yourself out there. Also meet aspiring actresses, models, photographers and so on.I started off with a friends of mine That did extra work on TV shows and movies, it gets to the point of who you know and who they know and keep going..its a battle but its worth it if you really want it  :-)

For those of you in the trade, have you noticed or witnessed any nepotism? I'd think it might be more prevalent in the film industry as in actors, for some, the entire family are famous actors! I think it comes down to knowing the right people, I'm not an aspiring makeup artist but just to give examples, I have a distant uncle who was a tv producer, I have another uncle who is an actor...if I were looking to become a celebrity makeup artist, I could ask my relatives for some help getting me an assistant position or something or at least introduce me to someone in the position of hiring. it's not really the fair and square approach I guess but then it's still networking and might get you closer to your dream.

Be friendly, be humble, know when to talk and when not to. Always accept advice and criticism. Act professional, never be afraid to ask questions. Find what suits you as far as creating your own style. Be observant, open minded, be on time, practice confidence, it's not about you, and love what you do. Develop an awesome portfolio, promo cards, resume etc.
Most of all LOVE what you do!!

Another thing is to network as much as possible with real makeup artists. No offense to Youtube vloggers but many of them are not real MUAs no matter how many videos they have. No clients = not a MUA.

If you have a passion for makeup and if you're a working pro then the best thing to do is attend PRO ONLY makeup shows to network as well as either join a union or be represented by a real agency.
