Curl hair after straightening?

I'm doing my friends hair for prom and she has really thick hair. She's Ethiopian so her hair isn't frizzy but it gets rally curl when you wet it. If I straighten out then it won't curl. Would it work if I blew out her hair with a round brush and blow drier? Would her hair be straight enough that I could curl it?

I think so just make sure you really dry it and hairspray after you curl it
