Do you leave the tape on or do you put nail polish on than take the tape off?

For this I painted my base color blue then once it dried I placed the striping tape over it. Then painted black over my whole nail, waited a few seconds then slowly peeled the tape off with tweezers. You can also just leave striping tape on your nail without painting over. It should stay put if you seal it in with a top coat.
