Now when I travel, I place thin cotton rounds over the shadow pans so there isn't a chance they will shake loose and explode like this, costing me $60 in product.

As I am sure that case was not cheap - you would think they would put something on the inside to prevent that from happening!! --- urban decay makes a 4 spot travel case for their eyeshadows. I adore mine!! ^_~.
