I first tried outlining the border with nail polish. It didn't come out looking so good. When i tried it out with acrylic paint, i felt more comfortable with it just because it's easier to clean. It you make a mistake, you can just scratch it off or wipe it off with a wet towel. Also, the vaseline technique helped me alot. It made me not worry about the mess i was making on my finger. So just keep practicing & i bet yours will come out looking better than mines :P
