Nail Artist Spotlight: Britney Tokyo

Who says nail art is over and done with? With stars like Allison Williams serving up steampunk realness for the Met Gala and Bella Hadid showing off her Disney-inspired claws, it’s safe to say the trend of colorful, bold nails is alive and well.

Britney Tokyo, an LA-based nail artist favored by the likes of Kylie Jenner, Lily Allen and K-pop superstar CL, truly knows the magic of glamorous nails. As a child growing up in Tokyo, Britney was always fascinated by the idea of creating art on fingertips, drawing on her own nails during class. This eventually led to graduating from one of Japan’s top nail academies and working at a salon.

In 2005, Britney left Japan for the United States, determined to become the world’s best nail artist. She began posting her designs on Instagram and soon enough, both her client list and fan base grew to epic proportions. Now Britney’s doing nails for red carpet events, fashion campaigns and collaborating with fellow artist Natalie Minerva a.k.a. Nail Swag (who we featured previously) as the unit, Tokyo Swag.

With her fingers on the pulse, we asked Britney what she thinks is the hottest look right now, and coming up this season. “The current trend is a rather darker tone. Beige or a gray color as the base, and matte finished, coffin-shaped gel extensions are what I do a lot these days,” says Britney. “I think lace, small flowers, and denim-like designs with lighter tones will come next!” This summer, it’s not going to just be about the hands, but the feet, too. “I think there will be a bigger spotlight on pedicure nail art!” she says.
