Lipstick Queen's Makeup Tips

Published Sep 03, 2011

This season is all about lips. Dark plums, super bright pinks and oranges, and the perfect shade of peachy pink are the colors to wear. But besides choosing the ideal shade for your skin tone, outfit, mood, and personal preference, you need to know how to apply it. We spoke with lipstick queen Poppy King, who recently collaborated with J.Crew to create the punchy orangey-red lipstick that appears in their gorgeous ad campaigns and with Kate Spade on a line called Supercalifragilipstick, and got her tips for lovely lips.

  • "When choosing your lipstick shade," says Poppy, " this is the general rule: The fairer your skin tone, the more yellow-based your lipstick should be, and the deeper your skin tone, the more blue-based shades will suit you."

  • "This fall it's all about red, all the time," says Poppy. "Whether your lip look is sheer or matte, just make it red!" Don't be afraid to wear red lipstick during the day—it's not just for nighttime.

  • "Prep your lips by exfoliating the dead skin with a spare toothbrush and then apply your lipstick," says Poppy.

  • "Don't think that using liner will achieve a perfect mouth," says Poppy. "Apply lip liner only if you feel more comfortable with it than without it. Liner is a tool, not a rule."

  • "If you want a sheer lip look, use a brush," says Poppy. "If not, then apply your lipstick straight from the tube."

I thought fair people should have a blue base to their red lip sticks, I know thats how I like mine!

Same here!Any yellow based lipsticks make me look sickly :(

These are great tips thanks!

I personally do not like my lipsticks to have a strong blue based.

The bennefits of actually reading and learning about things, and not just assuming them. I can't believe that only two years ago, I thought I couldn't wear intese colors. Thanks for the tips!

I know crazy right! I've learnt almost everything I know from the net and books (makeupw ise).

Nice one to know :D
