Q & A Natalie of cerealandtoast
Q: How were you inspired to start your own YouTube beauty channel?
I originally got inspired to make a channel when I first came across Michelle Phan’s videos, when she was still doing her old school DIY stuff. I found them so helpful that I wanted to create my own and spread it around more. I also wanted to make natural beauty more of a big thing too, I think flaws are so beautiful.
Q: What has been the most rewarding experience since starting your channel?
I get positive feedback on my reviews, which I love because it’s a really nice feeling that people trust me and my judgement.
Q: How do you come up with your beauty video materials?
I usually come up with video ideas when I’m looking through magazines like Glamour or flicking through different blogs. I definitely get inspired by the Olsen sisters, they’re not very heard of in the UK but they always look so casual and chic at the same time. For reviews, I usually just spot a product in my beauty baskets and think ‘wow I haven’t worn this in a long time, time for a review!’ I have a lot of products that are usually unused in my baskets because I’m not one to wear tons of different types of makeup, I usually like to stick to one or two styles, so when I find a lost or forgotten item it’s like I’m finding a piece of gold!
Q: What are the upsides and downsides since creating your YouTube beauty channel?
Being on camera at first was really hard, just because I’ve always been pretty insecure about seeing and hearing myself on camera, my friends always say I sound like Hermione Granger which put me off! But I think I’ve got used to it now, I’m so happy, because my channel has made me realise even more that no one has to be perfect. I really hope I’ve helped other people realise that too.
Q: Who are your favorite beauty guru’s?
Mhsvampire10 – She is the best makeup guru I’ve ever found on Youtube. She’s so friendly, real, and actually tells her subscribers if she thinks something’s crappy. I think that her smileyness is uplifting, I watch her videos when I’m feeling rubbish and instantly feel happy again after! It’s also an added bonus that we’ve become amazing friends over Facebook and Youtube mail chats!
Frmheadtotoe - I love Jen’s videos so much, I started watching her after finding her Easter Nail Art Tutorial, and got hooked. She’s just so cute (which feels weird to say because she’s 5 years older than me) but she really is! I love her tutorials and her reviews are even better.
Bubzbeauty - I think the second guru I started watching, and I love her just for her personality. She’s so fresh and happy and I especially love that she uses a lot of drugstore products. Plus she’s an inspiriation to follow your dreams, what with her clothing line, and she’s always supporting natural beauty and confidence boosting too.
MichellePhan – I remember finding her videos about two years ago, watching one after the other and have been pretty much addicted ever since. She’s such a wonder to watch, like you’re being hypnotized, and her videos are always so professional.
Q: What are your top 3 favorite makeup products?
I don’t think I could live without my Body Shop Eye Colour/Chocolate, I use it to fill in the fronts of my brows (my security blanket is having nice dark brows) and I think if I had to leave the house with just one product on my face, it would be that.
Rimmel’s Colour Show Off lipstick in Kiss Me is my favorite lip colour that I’ve ever bought! It smells like watermelons and it’s a really vibrant pink/coral colour, plus the packaging is really cute.
Rimmel’s Stay Matte Pressed Powder is the best mattifying powder in the whole world! I don’t think I could live without it now since it takes every last bit of shine away from my skin and it’s so cheap, which is unexpected. You never expect drugstore makeup to work entirely but it actually does.
