You've got the dress, the shoes, and the jewelry set, but how do you decide on your makeup for prom? Keep reading for tips on how to choose the best makeup for your dress based on color, fabric, and style!
Glittery Gowns
If your dress is busy with print or pattern, makeup may need to take a back seat. Most prom gowns are designed with multitonal fabrics which pick up a lot of light. For these light-reflective, glittery styles, use makeup with a subtle satin or pearl finish instead of the obvious glitter and sparkle. The slight sheen in the makeup will complement the fabric without going over-the-top.
Bright Gowns
Showstopper gowns seem to remain the trend of choice for prom season. Let vivid dresses stand out by sticking to universal shades (taupe, gray, black, mauve, peach, and pink) on your face. For nude or neutral colored dresses, you can have a little more fun—go for a rich plum, emerald, or navy smoky eye! Since lips are the most touched-up throughout the evening, keep them neutral and as maintenance-free as possible!
Theme Gowns
Themed dresses are always a fun way to experiment with a different look: Vintage, futuristic, classic Hollywood, grunge/punk, and high fashion are the most popular prom themes. Makeup becomes important in the overall styling, so take care to research your style thoroughly. Red lips and cat eyes are a classic nod to Hollywood glamour and vintage beauty, while metallic and dark colors reference futuristic and punk themes—explore and have fun with it!

Yes, false eyelashes are a must! You can go natural with just a few single lashes applied to the outer corner or you can go full-on glam with and entire strip. They really make your eyes stand out and are great for photographs.

When in doubt on how to do the makeup look at prom dress sites. Unlike pageant makeup which needs to be heavier for stage lights, prom makeup shouldn't make you look like a clown makeup case exploded all over your face. Focus on one feature on your face you like to play up and then the rest keep it neutral and simple.
