You’ve heard of color-correcting dark circles and blemishes, but what about your lips? Yes, even your pucker can be subjected to the wonders of color theory. “Hues like green, blue, purple, yellow, and black are used more in fashion and editorials rather than in film, but they’re fun shades to play with,” says celebrity and film makeup artist Heba Thorisdottir, whose clients include Scarlett Johansson, Cate Blanchett, and Kristen Wiig. While these rainbow shades may seem out of bounds for everyday wear, there are a multitude of ways to work these unexpected pout pigments into your daily routine.

BLUE

Just as blue and red make purple, an azure lip glaze enhances the cool pink undertones of any lip color. Blue gloss also counteracts yellow stains on your teeth and gives the illusion of a brighter smile. Apply a sheer, shimmering formula over a fuchsia lip for a dazzling, holographic effect.

GREEN

It might seem counterintuitive, but a green gloss makes a great nude lip! When you mix complimentary green and red pigments, they turn brown—the same rule applies on your pout! Fortunately, the color appears more like a honey glaze than a coffee bean.

YELLOW

“A sheer yellow gloss makes a great highlight for most lip colors,” says Heba. “The more opaque and shimmery, the better!” Dab a little of the lacquer to the center of your lips and on your cupid’s bow for high-focus shine.

BLACK

While black seems to be the most unwearable hue of them all, it’s actually more versatile than you think. “I love using an opaque, glittery black gloss to darken lipstick. It gives some extra dimension,” says Heba. Gray washes out darker complexions, so stick with deep purples or true black for a vampy effect.
