The Lazy Girl's Updo

A messy looped ponytail is the oldest trick in the lazy hair handbook. Most of us are guilty of it at one point or another, whether want to get your hair off your neck and out of your face, or you just want to mask a bad hair day! Well, good news Beauties: Bedhead is back! While this frumpy ’do may have started off as a casual day-off afterthought, the breezy bun-meets-ponytail is now becoming a huge trend in tresses. Neat versions of the tucked-under trend were even sported at fashion shows such as Carolina Herrera, Missoni, and Marc Jacobs. The undone updo has the movement of a ponytail and the texture and volume of a bun. When done right, it can also add a splash of sex appeal or soft romantic vibe to your look. when done right. Plus, the tousled effect pairs perfect with Spring's natural, minimal makeup looks. Need a few pointers on how to pull off the pony? We chatted with Suave Professionals celebrity hairstylist Jenny Cho—who has worked with Carey Mulligan and Amanda Seyfried—for a few tricks on this lazy girl trend.

"It's the classic cool-without-trying effect," explains Jenny. "People are starting to gravitate towards the understated look.” Plus, it's a cinch to create! "Prep hair with a bit of dry shampoo or hair spray to give locks texture and grip," says Jenny. If you want even more texture, create waves with a curling iron or mist locks with a sea-salt spray first. Then pull your hair into a ponytail securing strands with a small clear elastic at the crown. "On your last loop, don't pull the hair all the way through the elastic," instructs Jenny. The ends should be tucked underneath the holder. Gently tug the loop outward with both hands for a thicker bun-style. Be sure to tease loose, face-framing tendrils for a soft, romantic effect. Your ’do should appear undone all over, not just at the ponytail. “To cover the elastic, tug a small section free from the loop, wrap it around the ponytail base, and tuck its ends under the holder," says Jenny.

What outfit should you wear with this loose loop? To ensure the messy style seems intentional, “pair it with a form-fitting dress to create balance,” suggests Jenny. “If you are wearing something more flowing, opt for a sleek version of the hairstyle.” You can also accessorize the undone updo too. "I like to add a southwest-inspired turquoise and silver barrette," recommends Jenny. Or go glitzy with a shimmering fabric headband.
