Body By Kit: Mom Genes

"Mom Genes" by Kit Rich
“Well, before we ever get serious, I would have to see what your mother looks like,” my date smirked.
“Excuse me?” I questioned.
“You know, how your mother looks is how you are going to end up looking,” he finished.
So it’s come down to this, huh? A woman’s beauty is only validated and considered “marriage worthy” if her mother ages well. Well this is just great. Women not only have to rule the world in stilettos, they now also have to ensure their future love life by keeping tabs on their mother’s eating and exercise regime. This sounds exhausting and downright ridiculous.
Sadly this is not the first time I have heard this. I have sat amongst a group of male friends while they discussed dating women as though they were choosing whether to lease or buy a car. For some, the good looking mother was the warranty they needed to feel comfortable committing long-term.
Even the rap artist Juvenile dedicated an entire song, "Mamma Got Ass," to a woman getting all her attributes from her mother:
“Oh, where she get her eyes from? She get it from her mamma...
Oh, where she get her thighs from? She get it from her mamma...”
He keeps going, but I think we get it. Regardless of the fact that I think this wave of thought is completely juvenile (pun intended) and regardless of the fact I never saw that guy again, as a fitness expert this does bring up the subject of healthy lifestyle choices versus genetics. How much do genetics play a role in your body’s destiny? If your mother is overweight, will you be too—regardless of how much you work out and eat right? Is your fate in the hands that fed you?
The answer is both yes and no.
Yes, genetics do determine your body type. Your physique is something that you can maintain, tighten, tone, shape and mold, but its foundation you cannot change. And yes it is also true that if obesity runs in your family, the likelihood of you also gaining weight in later years is very possible.
But the upside is, no matter what your genetics are, a healthy active lifestyle can trump genetic pre-determination. Even those with “thin” genes can go downhill with abuse and negligence. This is where the knowledge of your body potential becomes a blessing and not a curse. If you know in advance that you are prone to weight gain and diseases such as diabetes, you can start using the right tools to prevent these problems from happening later in life. The earlier you start, the better chances you have of controlling your outcome.
The biggest road block I see with clients and peers is fear-based behavior that leads to unwanted results. This fear has a coin with two sides. One side is when a woman fears she has no control over the look of her body and just gives up on herself. Her thoughts influence her actions, so her greatest fear becomes her reality. She gains weight and the cycle continues. On the flip side, the fear may inspire extreme approaches to weight loss and health, with unrealistic goals. These intense behavior will only lead to weight loss that will never last. And it can cause the body to yo-yo, which can eventually cause stubborn weight gain later in life, not to mention other potential health problems.
It is so important to have a realistic attitude about what your body’s limitations are. For instance, I know that I will never look like a model. But I have a healthy-looking figure that can stay that way for the rest of my life if I treat it as I should.
All in all, you do have control over your destiny. You have control over your health by the choices you make every day. Balanced daily decisions add up and become your lifestyle. In my experience, a healthy body and mind help you make wiser and healthier choices in every other aspect of your life. Hopefully, you are or will become healthy enough to not date a guy like I did. Hopefully, the significant other you choose sees your true beauty and adores you just as you are and for all you will become. And hopefully, your significant other adores your mother for all that she is and for the simple fact that her body, whatever it may look like, brought you into this world.

My mom and I look very much alike, people say our faces are identical, and more times than not people think we are sisters... She's just heavier, and I'm taller, and our body types are very similar but obviously we have our differences.
I take care of many health aspects simply because she's been there already, so I kind of learn from her experience. However, I've dealt with different issues she hasn't and that in a way makes you learn more about your body. Diets do not apply equally for both of us for instance, as well as skin products (sadly).
We both have a slim waist (thank god), and here I'm praying I get to 48 with no wrinkles as she's done so far. LOL. I swear she has the most perfect skin, she even looks younger than her sisters, and mom is the eldest :)

I didnt even know half of these celebs were mother and daughter!:D

I know right? But now that you see them next to each other, so many of them look so similar!

Can I just say Demi and Rumer look more like sisters than mother and daughter...Amazing!!! My mother and i get the same thing everywhere we go, someone thinks shes my older sister. Here's hoping people will say the same thing about me when I have children.
Kit R.
They do look like sisters. It will be the same for you! Just take care of yourself both physically and mentally and your outward beauty will reflect that.Thank you so much for reading!

This is a great topic! My mom and I don't have the same body type but I have often wondered where fat will accumulate on me over the years in contrast to her. My mom is tall and has sort of an apple shape; tone arms and lean legs big bust, wider tummy. I think she looks wonderful for being a 53 year old who doesn't workout or watch what they eat but I am a bit obsessive when it comes to that because maintaining a healthy weight isn't as easy for me as it was for her when she was my age. I have to watch what I take in and make sure to workout at least 4 days a week ( (except this week I am so sick =[ ))

You could have a similar body type to someone else in your family, possibly on your father's side. Even though you don't have your mother's body type, it is important still to use her as an example because you still have her genetics. You mentioned that maintaining a healthy weight isn't so easy for you as it was for her at your age. Take note of the fact though that instead of just going "oh well," you are taking control of your life and starting at a very young age to eat right and workout. These habits stay with you, all the way into your later years and you will see that it will pay off. Thanks for commenting!

My mom is SUPER thin, and that is something she doesn't have to work at. I definitely have to work at staying at a good weight. I wish I looked like my mother!!!
Kit R.
I'm sure that can be very frustrating. But it is never a curse to be forced to take care of, and not take advantage of, your health starting young. Even though you have to workout and work at it, and although your focus is on your weight, the benefits go way deeper than that and you are contributing more to your health than you know. Remember too that sometimes skinny people don't work out because their only focus is their weight and they are what's called "skinny fat." No matter how thin you are, a healthy lifestyle helps prevent disease, such as hypertension, later on in life.

I always felt that Francis Bean Cobain looked more like her father than she did her mother. I would feel awkward if someone asked me how my mom looked since I look like my dad.
Kit R.
So many women look like their dads!!!!!!!!!!! I am complete mix between my mother and father. I often say a women tends to look like her father but have her mother's essence. Thanks for commenting!

HAHAHA are you seriously fooled into thinking that Kim Kardashian and her mother aren't ENTIRELY products of plastic surgery? COME ON. There's nothing to do with genetics there. Plastic. Fake. Altered. White-washed.
Yasmin K.
LOL I totally agree. The only one of those ladies who doesn't look like she's full of plastic is Susan Sarandon and her daughter looks just like a young version of her. Kudos to Susan for not falling on a plastic surgeons scalpel.
LeeAnn B.
LOL I think if Kim wasn't rich and couldn't afford a trainer and dietitian she would be overweight/ maybe obese. I just try to not compare myself to people you have surgically altered their body, I feel much better about my natural and healthy self this way!
Kit R.
I love these comments. Yes, I agree about Susan Sarandon. She has aged beautifully and naturally. Definite kudos to her. Also, LeeAnn, never compare yourself to anyone, especially those surgically altered, as you mentioned. But I do think there is a way to not compare, but admire other's beauty and use it as inspiration for yourself. I do it all the time. My looks are more similar to Zoeey Deschanel or Julianne Moore. So I use them as beauty inspirations.

I have a completely different body type from my mom and I did have someone ask that question while I was on a date with them. We did not go on a second date, what a horrible question to ask.
Onyx F.
Same here on the different body types. I actually take after my father's paternal grandmother. Try following THAT. O_O lol.
Some people, men and women, are just really good at sticking their foot in their mouth.
Riti C.
Same! My mum is tall and willowy and naturally thin, I'm short and have an hourglass figure and had to start watching what I ate from age 16!
Kit R.
I love these comments ladies. I am not sure whose body type I have either. I'm such a mix between my mom and dad's side. But, sadly, I'm not surprised you have heard these comments from men. It is becoming such a standard way of thinking for them. Thank you so much for reading!
Helena B.
All of this lady look fantastic!!younger and older....guys are stupid and some other thing I wish not to say...so I*m not really suprised!!
Kit R.
